Netflix has set a May 8 release date for Forever, a new series based on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel. The adaptation moves the setting to 2018 Los Angeles, following two Black teenagers, Keisha and Justin, as they experience first love while navigating their ambitions.
A Contemporary Approach to a Classic Story
Lovie Simone stars as Keisha Clark, a confident track athlete with her sights set on life after high school. Michael Cooper Jr. plays Justin Edwards, a talented basketball player working toward a future beyond his parents’ success. Their relationship becomes a defining moment that shapes their lives.
Mara Brock Akil, known for Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane, serves as executive producer and showrunner. This marks her first project under her overall deal with Netflix. Discussing Blume’s influence on her work, Brock Akil told Netflix’s TUDUM, “She was one of the first writers I read that dared to be honest about the human condition in young people.”
Regina King directs the first episode and serves as an executive producer alongside Blume, Susie Fitzgerald, Erika Harrison, Sara White, Shana C. Waterman, and Anthony Hemingway.
Los Angeles as a Backdrop for First Love
Netflix describes Forever as a romance that unfolds against the backdrop of Los Angeles. Brock Akil called the city “a place for dreamers” and likened love to the pursuit of ambition, with all its challenges and emotions.
The story focuses on Keisha and Justin’s experiences as they come to understand themselves and their futures. Their relationship is set within the realities of young adulthood, exploring moments of uncertainty and personal discovery.
Anticipation Builds as Netflix Releases First Look
Netflix has released images from the series, introducing audiences to the lead characters. Renate Radford, Netflix’s vice president of overall deals, emphasized the approach behind the adaptation, saying, “Mara’s creative and authentic storytelling allows us to present a fresh take on an iconic coming-of-age love story.”
This is the latest adaptation of Blume’s work, following the 2023 film Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. With Forever, Netflix continues to bring well-known books to new audiences while keeping the essence of the original work intact.
