Prime Video’s Reacher is deep into its third season, bringing back the brutal action that has defined the show while introducing new layers of tension. However, recent episodes have also acknowledged concerns about Reacher’s relentless approach to dealing with his enemies.
Unlike in previous seasons, supporting characters are now questioning his choices, while the central mystery continues to unfold with shifting allegiances, deadly mistakes, and a growing sense of danger.
Criticism of Reacher’s Violence Finally Gets Addressed
Season 2 faced criticism for leaning too heavily into Reacher’s violent tendencies without questioning their impact. Unlike in season 1, where law enforcement figures provided some balance, his former military team in season 2 largely encouraged his approach. This dynamic led to moments where lethal force seemed unnecessary, leaving some viewers frustrated with the character’s unchecked brutality.
Season 3 takes a different approach. In episode 4, DEA Agent Guillermo Villanueva openly challenges Reacher’s tendency to leave a trail of bodies behind. When he learns that Reacher has eliminated two targets, he expresses concern about the legal consequences for those helping him. His frustration reflects a shift in the narrative, introducing a perspective that was missing in the previous season.
Agent Duffy shares some hesitation about Reacher’s methods but still relies on his ability to get results. While she doesn’t push back as strongly as Villanueva, her reaction adds another perspective to the ongoing conversation about how far Reacher is willing to go.
A Costly Mistake and the Rising Threat to Reacher’s Team
With each episode, the situation becomes more precarious. Villanueva and Duffy barely escape an ambush in episode 5, thanks to a warning from Reacher and Agent Eliot. However, in the chaos, Duffy’s badge is left behind. Although this could expose their entire operation, Reacher retrieves it before anyone else finds it.
A separate blunder leads to even more severe consequences. While tasked with guarding a captured bodyguard, Eliot allows him a moment to smoke, unaware of the danger. The prisoner takes advantage of the opportunity, using hydrogen peroxide to blind Eliot before attacking. With no time to recover, Eliot is overpowered and killed, and the bodyguard escapes.
Reacher and Villanueva anticipate the next move, intercepting him before he can warn their enemies. The bodyguard is taken out, preventing immediate exposure, but the situation grows increasingly dangerous.
A Shocking Discovery Alters the Investigation
New details continue to shift the team’s focus. While Reacher and Duffy initially believe their targets are running a drug operation, they soon uncover that Beck and McCabe are actually trafficking weapons. This revelation suggests that federal authorities have been tracking the case for longer than expected.
During a search of Beck’s home, his men find that a French maid, Annette, has been sending messages to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The discovery exposes her as an informant, leading to her immediate execution. Reacher is ordered to dispose of the body, performing the task with clear reluctance.
Even with this development, some questions remain unanswered. While Reacher is convinced that Xavier Quinn is behind the operation, there has been no direct confirmation. As the show moves forward, it becomes clear that further twists are ahead.
The Stage Is Set for a Major Confrontation
Reacher and Beck receive an order to meet with McCabe, setting the scene for a face-to-face encounter that could bring new revelations. The circumstances remain unclear, adding another level of uncertainty as the team approaches a critical moment.
The show has revealed key pieces of the puzzle, but some lingering details suggest that not everything is as it seems. With only a few episodes remaining, the tension continues to escalate, leaving much at stake for Reacher and those working alongside him.
