Minka Kelly does not plan to reprise her role as Lyla Garrity in the upcoming Friday Night Lights reboot being developed by Peacock. While promoting her new Netflix series Ransom Canyon, the actor commented on the future of her character from the original football drama, suggesting her time in Dillon, Texas is finished.
“I think it’s always best leaving people — if even they do — wanting more,” Kelly told Deadline. “I think leaving that where it was is probably the right thing to do. Maybe too much sometimes is too much. I don’t know that they need more Lyla.”
Kelly starred in Friday Night Lights from 2006 through 2009. Her character, Lyla, was first introduced as the Panthers’ head cheerleader and girlfriend to quarterback Jason Street. After Street was paralyzed during a game, Lyla’s storyline shifted dramatically, including a breakup and a brief relationship with Tim Riggins. By the time she left Dillon for college, her arc had effectively concluded. She did not return in the show’s final seasons.
Peacock secured development rights to a reboot of the series in December. No cast or plot details have been confirmed, and it remains unclear how directly the new version will connect to the original. The original series aired on NBC and later gained a following through streaming and syndication.
In her current work, Kelly stars opposite Josh Duhamel in Ransom Canyon, which premieres April 17 on Netflix. The series, based on Jodi Thomas’s novels, is a contemporary Western centered on the lives and rivalries of three ranching families. Duhamel plays Staten Kirkland, a landowner struggling with personal and professional loss, while Kelly’s character, Quinn O’Grady, serves as a steady presence in his life.
Kelly described Quinn as a character with some familiar traits. “I think Quinn is maybe Lyla 20 years later, a little bit more grown up,” she said. “So I’m just gonna focus on Quinn for now.”
The cast also includes Eoin Macken as Davis, a competitor to Staten in both land conflicts and personal relationships. Lizzy Greene and Garrett Wareing appear in a subplot involving a young cheerleader and football player, offering a narrative parallel to the teen drama of Friday Night Lights. James Brolin, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, and Andrew Liner are among the series regulars.
The recurring cast features Brett Cullen, Kate Burton, Jaren Robledo, Jennifer Ens, Kenneth Miller, Niko Guardado, Justin Johnson Cortez, Casey W. Johnson, and Philip Winchester. The series runs ten episodes.
