Robert Pattinson is being considered for a role in Dune: Messiah, the third entry in Denis Villeneuve’s screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novels.

Sources familiar with the project say that Villeneuve is interested in casting Pattinson. No official offer has been extended. The role has not been confirmed, but industry speculation has pointed toward a possible appearance as Scytale, a character introduced in Herbert’s second Dune novel.

Villeneuve is finalizing the script, and production is expected to begin this summer. Dune: Messiah is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026. The story takes place 12 years after the events of Dune: Part Two, with Paul Atreides serving as Emperor, married to Princess Irulan while maintaining a partnership with Chani.

Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet are expected to return. Jason Momoa recently indicated he will reprise his role as Duncan Idaho. Other cast members likely to return include Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Josh Brolin, and Austin Butler. The ongoing casting process follows the pattern of the earlier Dune films, which assembled large ensemble casts.

The first two Dune films were released by Warner Bros. and produced by Legendary Entertainment. They earned a combined global box office total exceeding $1.1 billion. Together, they received 15 Academy Award nominations and won eight. Both were nominated for Best Picture.

Pattinson is represented by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, Curtis Brown Group, and attorney Robert Offer. He is currently filming The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, and appeared recently in The Drama, an A24 production co-starring Zendaya. He is also set to return as Bruce Wayne in a sequel to The Batman, scheduled for 2027.

Dune: Messiah will be the third installment in the series under Villeneuve, who has stated it will be his final entry in the Dune franchise before shifting to other work. The adaptation follows material from Herbert’s books and has drawn attention for its approach to serialized science fiction on screen.

The first film, released during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, opened in theaters and on streaming. It introduced Paul Atreides and the planet Arrakis to new audiences. Dune: Part Two, released in 2024, continued the story and introduced new factions and political figures as Paul’s influence spread.

Pattinson’s potential involvement has not been addressed by Legendary, which declined to comment.
