Marvel Locks New Plan for Blade After Years of Turbulence

Kevin Feige confirms the present-day, R-rated thriller will proceed with Mahershala Ali after director exits and multiple page-one rewrites.

Marvel Studios says it has settled on a path forward for Blade after what Kevin Feige calls “four different scripts and too many false starts.” The producer told fans the long-gestating reboot will now unfold in the present day, lean toward an R rating and keep Mahershala Ali in the title role he accepted six years ago.

Studio insiders put the working budget near $80 million—well below recent MCU tent-poles—in line with a corporate push to scale back costly expansions. Feige acknowledged that the project “was a casualty of quantity over quality,” adding that narrowing the scope has clarified its tone as a gritty vampire thriller rather than a sprawling crossover.

The road has been rocky. Original director Bassam Tariq exited weeks before cameras were to roll in 2022, citing creative differences. Successor Yann Demange departed amicably last summer after the film cycled through writers Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto and Michael Green without locking a draft that satisfied the studio or its star. Current revisions, overseen by Eric Pearson, reportedly center on a streamlined narrative that “lets Blade kill vampires” rather than serve as a vehicle for franchise world-building.

The repeated resets cost the picture its November 2025 slot; Disney quietly pulled the title from the calendar while leaving a trio of untitled 2028 holds that analysts now view as potential landing points. Despite the delay, Ali remains committed and has told associates he is “ready the moment Marvel calls,” though he hasn’t yet received a definitive start date.

Feige’s latest update aims to assure investors and fans that Blade is alive, framing the setbacks as a lesson from a period when the MCU grew “too fast.” Observers see the project as a test case for Marvel’s newly stated strategy: fewer releases, tighter budgets and creative autonomy for filmmakers. Whether the Daywalker finally reaches the screen now hinges on locking a director who shares that pared-down vision—and on Marvel resisting the impulse to reinvent the wheel once more.
