Netflix will release a sing-along version of its breakout animated hit KPop Demon Hunters on August 25, one day after a two-day theatrical event that drew sold-out crowds across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. The streaming edition follows more than 1,000 sold-out screenings and a footprint of roughly 1,700 North American locations over the weekend, extending the film’s summer-long run as a family and teen sensation.
The movie, which debuted on June 20, now ranks as the platform’s most-watched original animated title and its second most-watched English-language film, according to company tallies. Viewership has stayed high through August, aided by a soundtrack that has produced multiple hit singles and sing-along audiences comfortable belting the choruses in public.
Momentum spilled into New York City on August 22, when the Empire State Building staged a gold “Music-to-Light” show synced to the song “Golden,” created with partners including CAPE and iHeartMedia. The tower’s lighting calendar confirms the showcase as part of a “Golden Weekend” tied to the film and the sing-along screenings.
At an early preview for the sing-along cut, EJAE—the singing voice of lead character Rumi—told fans she was “really grateful” for the response as the movie crossed key milestones on both the film and music charts. Her remarks mirrored viewer enthusiasm documented at studio screenings and during the weekend’s theater rollout.
KPop Demon Hunters follows Huntr/x, a three-member girl group who secretly moonlight as demon fighters, with their performances helping to protect the world via the “Honmoon,” a shimmering barrier central to the film’s lore. The voice cast includes Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, Byung Hun Lee, Ken Jeong, and Yunjin Kim, among others.
