Mark Ruffalo Challenges James Cameron’s Anti-Netflix Letter in Warner Deal Fight

The actor’s Threads post argues that merger worries should apply to any buyer as Netflix and Paramount spar over Warner’s future.

Mark Ruffalo has challenged James Cameron’s push to block Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, arguing that concerns about consolidation should apply no matter which bidder prevails. Ruffalo posted on Threads that lawmakers and industry observers should ask Cameron a direct question: “Are you also against the monopolization that a Paramount acquisition would create? Or is it just that of Netflix?” He added that the answer “should be asked immediately,” while also pressing Sen. Mike Lee, who has received letters about the deal, on whether he holds the same worries about a Paramount-led purchase.

Ruffalo’s comments follow Cameron’s letter to Lee warning that a Netflix-Warner combination could damage theatrical film culture and reduce jobs tied to exhibition and production. Cameron wrote that Netflix’s business incentives clash with sustaining a healthy cinema market and criticized reports that new films could receive a 17-day theatrical run before moving to streaming.

Netflix has pushed back hard. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Lee that Cameron’s claims “knowingly misrepresent” Netflix’s plans, saying the company remains committed to a 45-day exclusive theatrical window for Warner Bros. releases and denying he ever promoted a 17-day model. Sarandos also framed the public dispute as part of a broader campaign around the competing bids for Warner’s assets.

The exchange lands in the middle of an escalating deal fight. Netflix has put forward an all-cash offer for Warner’s studios and streaming operations, while Paramount has pursued its own bid and has sought room to improve terms as boards and regulators weigh the stakes.

Paramount said the U.S. antitrust waiting period tied to its bid has expired, a procedural step that removes one statutory barrier while leaving the door open for further government scrutiny. Ruffalo did not endorse a specific buyer in his post; he aimed his criticism at selective outrage, warning that the same consolidation arguments should not change depending on which corporate flag is planted on the lot.
