Andrew Garfield Still Hasn’t Seen “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Denies “Doomsday” Role

At the premiere of his new film "The Uprising," Garfield addressed Tom Holland's blockbuster success and reiterated his denial of a Marvel multiverse return, despite a track record of misdirection on the subject.

Andrew Garfield told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of “The Uprising” that he has not yet watched Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” or Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” explaining he wants to see both films before offering Holland any congratulations. “I don’t want to be disingenuous,” Garfield said, adding that he plans to reach out once he has actually watched the movie.

Garfield played the web-slinger in two solo films before reprising the role alongside Holland and Tobey Maguire in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” a multiverse team-up that grossed $1.9 billion worldwide. He offered warm words about the character’s broad appeal, saying Spider-Man belongs to everyone and reflects something ordinary and extraordinary in every viewer. “Brand New Day” has already pulled in $891 million domestically and is tracking to become the first film to cross $1 billion at the North American box office alone, a milestone that would place it among the biggest theatrical releases in Sony’s history.

Pressed again on whether he appears in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Garfield repeated his denial, telling Variety flatly that he is not part of the film. The question carries baggage: Garfield spent most of 2021 denying involvement in “No Way Home” before his surprise appearance became one of that film’s most talked-about moments. When reminded of that history, Garfield smiled and said audiences would find out eventually one way or another, a response that has done little to settle speculation among fans tracking Marvel’s next ensemble tentpole. He has separately used blunter language to shoot down rumors of a “Doomsday” role in past interviews, while leaving more room for ambiguity when asked about the following film, “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

Garfield’s new film, directed by Paul Greengrass, casts him as a fictional leader of a commoners’ rebellion against King Richard II. Greengrass told Variety that Garfield pushed to perform the bulk of his own stunt work throughout the production’s numerous fight sequences, leaving the actor nursing sore knees by the end of the shoot.
