The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards drew 6.7 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, according to preliminary Nielsen figures, marking an 11.7 percent decline from last year’s ceremony even as the show still posted its best NBC performance in over a decade.
Monday’s broadcast, hosted by “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, fell short of the 7.59 million viewers who tuned into last year’s ceremony on CBS, a telecast that had marked the most-watched Emmys since 2021. Compared against last year’s initial, unadjusted figure of 7.42 million, this year’s decline narrows to roughly 10 percent. The final tally could shift once Nielsen releases adjusted same-day numbers in the coming days.
Despite the year-over-year drop, the ceremony still outperformed NBC’s previous turn hosting the Emmys in 2022, posting a gain of about 10 percent in total viewership. The network’s rotation puts it in the Emmys’ broadcast-network wheel once every four years, competing against its own Monday Night Football scheduling that pushes the ceremony off its usual Sunday date whenever NBC’s turn comes around. The show ranked as Monday’s top entertainment program and the most-watched Monday entertainment telecast of the year in both total viewers and the advertiser-favored 18-49 demographic.
Social media engagement told a stronger story than linear ratings alone. The ceremony generated 133 million video views across Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, a 90 percent jump from last year’s show, along with 17 million total interactions across those platforms, again leading all programming that night.
The results arrive at a moment of flux for the ceremony’s broadcast future. Deadline has reported that Amazon is in talks with the Television Academy to acquire rights to the Emmys telecast, a move that would end the show’s decades-long run rotating across the major broadcast networks and mirror recent shifts by other awards shows, including the Oscars’ new streaming arrangement with YouTube and similar moves by the SAG Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards.
This year’s Emmys handed top honors to “The Pitt,” “Hacks” and other freshly minted winners, with the ceremony continuing a broader ratings pattern in which the show has alternated gains and declines depending largely on which network holds hosting duties and how that network’s own schedule affects the broadcast date.
