Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” finished as the second-biggest film in the world over the Oct. 16-18 weekend, trailing only Paramount’s “Street Fighter” and showing the continuing pull of the 75-year-old Tamil star. The action comedy grossed $31.2 million, according to Rentrak estimates, against $51.1 million for “Street Fighter.” Director Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel opened in India on Thursday, Oct. 15, giving it a four-day extended weekend. It collected an estimated INR224 crore ($23.5 million) in that span in India alone. Thursday opened with $7 million, collections dipped on Friday, then climbed through the weekend, with Sunday bringing in $6.5 million.
The worldwide total depends on the tracker. Indian outlets put the global four-day gross between INR410 crore and INR424 crore, about $44.5 million, and described it as the largest opening ever for a Tamil film. Overseas markets contributed an estimated INR190 crore, roughly $20 million. Sun Pictures backs the film. Those figures come from trade estimates, not audited reports, and final numbers may shift. Indian trackers also reported more than 10 million tickets sold across BookMyShow and District in four days. Those platforms handle much of India’s online booking, so the figure covers only part of total attendance.
The film arrives with high expectations. The first “Jailer,” also directed by Nelson, followed a retired jailer who returns to action to protect his family from gangsters. In August 2023 it joined three other major Indian releases to produce the biggest weekend in Indian box office history at the time, a combined INR3.9 billion ($47 million). Its lifetime worldwide gross is estimated at INR605 crore to INR650 crore. That sets the bar for a sequel whose first four days already reached about two-thirds of the lower estimate.
Outside India, the film’s reach is smaller. “Jailer 2” played in more than 20 markets, but the weekend’s global ranking owes much to home-market strength. In South Korea, “Street Fighter” opened at No. 8, while in India the Tamil sequel dominated, a split that shows how separately the two markets move. Rajinikanth’s run also follows “Coolie,” his August 2025 release that collected INR1 billion in advance sales and an opening weekend of similar scale.
