Binge has added nine actors to “Wentworth: Halfway Home” and released a first trailer, exactly five years after the original prison drama aired its final episode. The new cast members are Nadine Garner, Elaine Crombie, Grace Chow, Sara West, Claude Jabbour, Daniel Henshall, Laura Gordon, Thom Green and Chika Ikogwe.
They join Rachel Griffiths, Sophie Lowe, Alex King and Chenile Chandler, whose roles as Moira, Sam, Dee and Lily were announced earlier. Three veterans of the original series return: Katrina Milosevic as Susan “Boomer” Jenkins, Nicole da Silva as Franky Doyle and Kate Box as Lou Kelly.
Binge timed Monday’s reveal to the anniversary of the October 26, 2021 finale. The teaser sets up a story built on parole and suspicion. Boomer walks out of prison and into Sal’s Halfway House, determined to win custody of her daughter and rebuild her life. A body turns up soon after, and she must decide whom to trust among the ex-inmates sharing her roof.
The premise moves the franchise past the walls that defined it. The original “Wentworth,” a modern reworking of the 1979 series “Prisoner,” ran eight seasons and built its reputation on a claustrophobic women’s prison. Carly Heaton, a Fremantle executive producer, has said the spin-off widens that world while staying faithful to what fans loved.
Jessica Paine leads a writers’ room that includes Kodie Bedford, Alexandra Cullen, Hannah Samuel, Alix Beane, Romina Accurso, Nikki Tran and Chris Squadrito. Jessica Brookman works as script editor. Filming began in Melbourne in late July, the city that served as home base for both earlier series.
The ensemble pairs established faces with performers fresh from recent Australian dramas. King appeared in the global hit “War Machine,” while Chandler is making her first major television appearance. Crombie, Garner and Henshall bring credits from “Invisible Boys,” “The Doctor Blake Mysteries” and “The Family Next Door.”
Questions remain about how a story without bars will hold the tension that made the original compulsive viewing. Heaton and her team are betting that the pressures outside, from custody fights to a suspicious death, can replace it. Binge and Foxtel have not set a premiere date beyond promising a launch before the end of the year.
