Slow Horses Rides Back on 24 September With Season 5

September’s six-episode chapter adapts London Rules, bringing fresh peril—and fresh humour—to Gary Oldman’s scruffy band of MI5 outcasts.

Apple TV+ has set 24 September 2025 for the return of its BAFTA-winning spy drama Slow Horses, premiering the first two of six episodes that Wednesday and rolling out the rest weekly until 22 October. First-look images confirm the reunion of Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Kristin Scott Thomas, while Ted Lasso alum Nick Mohammed guests as an MI5 interloper.

The new run adapts Mick Herron’s novel London Rules, sending the Slough House misfits scrambling after tech wizard Roddy Ho’s improbable new girlfriend coincides with a spate of threats across the capital. Apple’s synopsis teases that “in the world of espionage, the London Rules — cover your back — always apply”.

Showrunner Will Smith says the season has “a different feel… less brutal and a bit funnier,” reflecting Herron’s black-comic tone while keeping stakes high. Smith told Collider that principal photography wrapped “three or four days early” in late 2024, giving editors a head start as season 4 aired.

Oldman, who recently called Jackson Lamb “the role of a lifetime” in an interview about the show’s Emmy momentum, confirmed he has already finished shooting season 6, which Apple ordered last October. The back-to-back production model, Empire notes, allows the series to deliver a new instalment every year—rare consistency in today’s streaming calendar.

Awards buzz has kept pace: Slow Horses took home the Editing and Sound trophies at the 2025 BAFTA Television Craft Awards and leads Apple’s haul with six main-category BAFTA TV nominations, including Leading Actor for Oldman. Forbes, meanwhile, hails the show as the streamer’s “steadiest crowd-pleaser,” crediting its brisk six-episode arcs and sardonic wit for “defying the sprawl that sinks other prestige sagas”.

With source novels still in reserve and production already looking ahead to season 7, Slow Horses has evolved from cult import to cornerstone franchise, giving Apple a reliable dose of sharp-tongued espionage in the increasingly crowded fight for subscriber loyalty.
