What John Oliver And Hannah Einbinder Said In Their Bleeped Emmys Speeches

Censored moments included Oliver’s swear-laden riff on the host’s donation bit and Einbinder’s closing line referencing ICE and Gaza, both reconstructed from in-room reports after the telecast.

John Oliver and Hannah Einbinder both had portions of their acceptance speeches muted during the 77th Primetime Emmys on September 14, prompting immediate questions about what was said and why the broadcast cut the audio. Room reports and follow-up coverage clarified that producers censored expletives and, in one case, a political statement, while clips and transcripts circulated online after the telecast.

Accepting for variety series, Oliver sped through thanks before turning to the night’s running gag from the host about docking a charitable donation for long speeches. He punctuated his sign-off with, “F— you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you… and you can add a f— to the swear jar as well,” which the broadcast muted in real time but attendees recorded in full. The line fit the bit’s logic—winners who kept remarks short added back to the pledged total—and explained why censors reacted to language rather than content.

Einbinder, winning supporting actress in a comedy, closed her remarks with “Go Birds, f— ICE, and free Palestine,” a sign-off that combined a nod to her NFL team with a pointed message about immigration enforcement and the war in Gaza. The profanity triggered the mute on air; the full line was verified afterward by reporters in the room and shared widely. Her remarks followed months of industry activism around Gaza and came amid a ceremony where several attendees wore cease-fire pins.

The response extended beyond awards chatter. A Department of Homeland Security official condemned Einbinder’s “f— ICE” remark, arguing that such rhetoric endangers officers, while the actor told press backstage that her comments reflected personal concerns about Gaza and a desire to separate Jewish identity from the policies of a nation-state. The exchange illustrates how modern live shows balance broadcast-standards compliance with winners’ impulse to speak on current events, leaving censors to mute profanity even as the substance is quickly reconstructed by viewers and journalists who were in the room.
