DreamWorks Gives Green Light to ‘Shrek 5’ and Abandons Reboot Plans

The much-beloved franchise 'Shrek' is getting a fifth installment, as DreamWorks Animation scraps plans for a reboot and focuses on continuing the established story. Negotiations are already underway to bring back the original voice cast.

DreamWorks Animation had plans for a ‘Shrek’ reboot, which was reported by Variety back in 2018. However, the studio seems to have shifted its focus and decided to continue the existing story with ‘Shrek 5’. This is great news for fans who were disappointed with the idea of a reboot.

The characters of the franchise are so iconic and beloved that fans found it difficult to imagine them with a new look and different voices. As a result, the decision to make a fifth installment instead of a reboot has been well received.

The decision to go ahead with ‘Shrek 5’ was influenced by Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, which is an affiliate of Universal Pictures along with DreamWorks Animation.

Meledandri is pushing for the return of the original voice cast, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey.

Shrek 5

Negotiations are underway, and there seems to be enthusiasm from the actors to reprise their roles. Meledandri has a lot of weight in Universal Pictures’ management, having created successful franchises like ‘Minions’ and worked closely with Nintendo to bring ‘Super Mario Bros. The Movie’ to life.

Apart from the love for the franchise, there is an economic aspect to the decision as well. The recent success of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, a spin-off from ‘Shrek’, which generated $478 million worldwide, has shown that there is money to be made from spin-offs.

Therefore, after ‘Shrek 5’, DreamWorks Animation plans to give the green light to a spin-off for Donkey. Eddie Murphy is reportedly excited about the possibility of bringing his character back to the big screen.

However, both ‘Shrek 5’ and the Donkey spin-off are still in the early stages, and it may be a while before we get to see them.

In conclusion, DreamWorks Animation’s decision to abandon the reboot plans and give the green light to ‘Shrek 5’ is great news for fans of the franchise.

The negotiation to bring back the original voice cast is a promising development, and the success of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ has shown that there is money to be made from spin-offs.

It may be a while before we get to see ‘Shrek 5’ and the Donkey spin-off, but the fact that they are in the works is exciting news.
