Exciting news for fans of the Death Stranding franchise! Hideo Kojima, the renowned director and mastermind behind Metal Gear Solid, unveils that Death Stranding 2 has undergone a complete rewrite in response to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
As the game’s release date looms on the horizon, along with the confirmation of a film adaptation, Death Stranding 2 promises to challenge the very ideas that made the original game a unique experience while redefining the concept of “stranding.” With Kojima’s touch, it’s bound to be another compelling masterpiece.
Released in 2019, Death Stranding introduced players to Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame.
The game’s premise revolved around reconnecting a post-apocalyptic United States through the ‘Chiral Network,’ uniting isolated settlements. However, Kojima now reveals that Death Stranding 2 will explore different perspectives on the theme of connection.
In an interview with Japanese publication Natalie, translated by Google, Kojima shares his insights: “Humans need to go into the outside world and move.
I reconsidered the concept of ‘connection,’ and in DS2, the meaning of ‘strand’ has changed. At the end of the teaser, there is a message ‘Should we have connected?'”
In the original Death Stranding, ‘stranding’ referred, in part, to the souls of the departed, known as ‘BTs’ or ‘beached things,’ becoming stranded in the realm of the living, much like whales stranded on beaches.
However, Kojima explains that the sequel has undergone a significant rewrite to present a fresh approach to this theme and the idea of connection, influenced by the pandemic.
“DS2’s story was made before corona,” says Kojima, “But I had to rewrite everything because of corona. In Death Stranding, it was about the importance of connecting, but with the corona crisis, pseudo-connections like remote interactions have gained prominence. I felt that these pseudo-connections alone would not lead to fulfilling human lives.”
Amidst the excitement for Death Stranding 2, Kojima tantalizes fans with hints about the forthcoming film adaptation. “I would like to do something unique for the film,” he teases, “so I plan to create something entirely different. Prepare to be surprised.”
As anticipation builds for Death Stranding 2, it’s worth noting that Kojima has multiple projects in the works. A full remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 is currently in development, alongside the MGS Master Collection, a re-release of the original trilogy.
