League of Legends Players Applaud Removal of Mythic Items After 3 Years of Asking

Riot Games announces the removal of Mythic items from League of Legends, eliciting positive reactions from the player community.

In a surprising move, Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends, has revealed that Mythic items will be taken out of the game by January 2024. While such substantial changes can often cause turmoil among players, this time the reaction seems to be leaning towards the positive.

Mythic items were introduced to the League of Legends universe in 2021. These powerful items were meant to serve as focal points of players’ builds, bestowing significant effects that molded their playstyle from one match to another.

Unlike the game’s Legendary items, Mythics were unique for including special passive effects. However, player feedback over the years suggested that these items were somewhat limiting.

Earlier this year, Riot Games acknowledged the concerns voiced by many players regarding the impact of Mythic items on gameplay. They admitted that their initial goals for these items had not been met and their understanding of in-game items had evolved since then. This admission paved the way for the decision to remove Mythic items entirely in 2024.

Director’s Insights

league of legends

Game director Pu Liu elaborated on the decision in a recent developer update. He mentioned the challenge of catering to various champions within a class using only a few Mythic items. He explained that this approach worked well for approximately half of the champion roster, while the rest were left with items that didn’t quite fit their playstyle or suppressed their creativity.

Considering League of Legends boasts over 160 unique characters, the phrase “half the roster” holds substantial weight. The complexity of catering to such a diverse array of champions underscores the difficulties Riot Games faced in creating universally balanced Mythic items.

Although the Mythic tier is being phased out, some of the current Mythic items will endure. Liu assured players that beloved Mythic items would be tweaked to offer exciting alternatives rather than being central components of builds.

Player responses to the announcement indicate a generally positive reception. Some players believe that the change won’t significantly alter the game’s dynamics, while many others see it as a long-awaited and overdue adjustment. The sentiment is that the game had revolved around the champions who could best exploit Mythic items, creating a metagame tied to these items.

Players are quick to recognize Riot Games’ willingness to accept feedback and make changes. Even those who acknowledged the positive aspects of Mythic items are content with their departure, noting that this alteration will allow previously underpowered champions to shine.

While a specific date for the removal of Mythic items hasn’t been disclosed, Liu assured players that comprehensive details about item changes and other upcoming adjustments would be revealed soon.
