Getting Lost in a Melancholy Fantasy Worth Exploring

Sands of Aura first emerged a couple years ago as an E3 demo, showcasing an intriguing fusion of Diablo loot hunting and Dark Souls precise combat. This initial showing indicated developer Chashu Entertainment was on the right track with their open world action-RPG vision. However, it’s been a long road from that early vertical slice to full release. Now with the finished product hitting Steam, does Sands of Aura fulfill the promise of its conceptual origins? In many regards yes, but there are some clear caveats.

At its core, Sands of Aura delivers a sprawling fantasy realm blending action-centric gameplay with RPG progression systems. Your journey begins as a Remnant Knight recruit, last of a dwindling heroic order struggling to save the deteriorating world of Talamhel. What was once a thriving, verdant landscape is now an endless ocean of sand dotted with cyclopean ruins. As the perpetual twilight sets in, you must restore life to this dying land and uncover the source of its creeping corruption.

From a broad perspective, Sands of Aura hits the right notes. Its melancholic world brims with secrets to uncover across seas of undulating dunes. Ferocious enemies in the vein of Dark Souls demand precision and skill to overcome. Loot drops enable deep character builds full of customization. Yet in the finer executional details, some blemishes emerge that hold the experience back from its full potential. Overlong stretches between narrative beats, a lack of maps and waypoints, punishing difficulty spikes, and technical shortcomings in audio mixing end up hampering the soul of this ambitious title.

In essence, Sands of Aura demonstrates a alluring creative vision that isn’t fully realized. For fans of brutally challenging action-RPGs, there is much fun to be mined from its sand-laden depths. But a bit more polish could have lifted Sands of Aura to true greatness. Even in its imperfect state, it remains a commendable effort blending genres and serving up satisfying gameplay in a striking original world.

A Visual Tour of Talamhel’s Melancholic Magnificence

Sands of Aura leverages its art direction to vividly realize the melancholic magnificence of the world of Talamhel. Both natural and architectural environments convey a potent sense of vertical scale, even as most adventure zones remain relatively compact diorama-style spaces. The ancient ruins and cyclopean structures towering across the landscape stand as crumbling monuments to civilizations faded into twilight. Yet in the shadow of this imposing grandeur, you take the role of a small adventurer, dwarfed by the immensity surrounding you. This interplay between personal scale and environmental scope immerses you in Talamhel’s gloomy beauty.

The seas of undulating dunes showcase the engine’s ability to render flowing vistas that stretch to the horizon. As your grainwake ship skims across the desert ocean, you’ll marvel at the tranquil grace of the perpetually shifting sands. Each new island offers a thematically distinct biome to explore, from haunted graveyards to dilapidated temples. The diversity of areas provides visual surprises while retaining an underlying melancholy. Flourishes like dust billowing in shafts of light and tattered flags fluttering in the breeze deepen the atmosphere.

Character and creature models adopt an exaggerated style reminiscent of Tim Burton films. This adds flair that meshes well with the colossal ruins. Minimalist menus and UI elements don’t distract from the scenery, yet some basic quality of life features like mini-maps are absent. The visual presentation excels at environmental worldbuilding but falls short on navigation tools. Effects like magical spells add spectacle without overpowering the screen.

Overall, Sands of Aura leverages visual design to construct a poignant air of faded majesty. You feel engulfed in the grandeur of a dying realm filled with secrets waiting to be uncovered. Strong art direction carries players through the melancholic fantasy, even if some technical shortcomings exist under the surface.

A Mixed Audio Experience Between Highs and Lows

Sands of Aura hits dramatic high notes in parts of its audio presentation, but technical flaws bring other elements down to disappointing lows. The result is a mixed audio experience.

Sands of Aura Review

The musical score stands as an undisputed highlight. Composer Eduardo Lopez conjures a haunting, soulful soundtrack utilizing strings, piano, and choir. The instrumentation diversity creates an immersive atmosphere that amplifies the melancholy and mystery of Talamhel. Somber melodic motifs offer quiet moments of grace between heated battles. This is a soundtrack worth enjoying outside of the game itself.

Where the music soars, the sound effects remain merely adequate. Efforts like muffled footsteps trudging through sand add realistic texture, but the mix seems subdued. Volume levels of certain sound elements feel disproportionate, like overly loud wind contrasted with muted spell noises. More immersive ambient audio integration could have better complemented the visual presentation.

By far the weakest aspect comes from inconsistent voice acting. There is noticeable quality variance across performances. Some actors deliver nuanced, compelling takes on characters that bring added life to the world. Others seem phoned in and devoid of enthusiasm. Odd mixing problems leave certain lines nearly unintelligible compared to surrounding dialogue. The southern accent on one NPC breaks immersion. With better direction and post-processing, the acting could have matched the bar set by the music.

In the end, Sands of Aura partially lives up to its artistic potential in the audio department thanks to a memorable soundtrack. But lackluster sound design and hit-or-miss voice work fail to fully support that strength. Polishing up these weaker elements could have completed a masterful audio experience worthy of the game’s creative vision. There is greatness here, but also glaring flaws that diminish the final product.

Brutal, Unforgiving Combat Anchors a Deep Action-RPG Experience

At its core, Sands of Aura delivers a compelling action-RPG experience anchored by challenging, precision-based combat. The gameplay loop follows a familiar pattern – explore islands to fight enemies, gain loot drops, then use resources to upgrade gear and character builds. However, the demanding enemy encounters and complex upgrade paths result in an experience distinct from typical action-RPGs.

Sands of Aura Review

Combat blends elements of tough-as-nails Soulslike games with the loot grind of Diablo clones. Enemies appear at fixed points, demanding skill to overcome their devastating attacks. While their locations remain static, defeated foes respawn when you re-enter an area or pray at a sanctuary idol to reset your healing chimes. Death results in all currency being dropped, adding tense risk-reward resource management. Healing is limited to a few consumable chimes between sanctuaries, forcing careful health management and enemy luring tactics. Just one or two hits can kill if you’re unprepared. Mastering dodging, parrying, and precision strikes is mandatory for survival.

This brutal combat complexity interweaves with varied progression systems that enable deep character customization. Defeated enemies and hidden treasure provide upgrade materials, currency, and gear drops. Crafting powerful weapons requires combining parts found across Talamhel, adding RPG depth. The blacksmithing system offers ample creativity for your playstyle – swords, axes, spears, martial arts, and more. Armor sets grant special bonuses, while rune slots provide further fine-tuning. Spells and weapon buffs open up offensive options. With hundreds of parts to discover, no two weapon builds will be identical.

While offering robust customization, the difficulty curve demands significant grinding. Major spikes gate story progress until you’ve acquired enough upgrades. Even then, enemies punish the slightest mistake. Meticulous players will appreciate the system mastery required, but those seeking a smooth adventure may find the grinding exhausting.

By blending precise, high-risk combat with expansive customization, Sands of Aura nails a specific niche. The satisfaction of finally defeating that enemy who crushed you dozens of times proves rewarding for seasoned action gamers. Yet the repetitive grind between such milestones can test one’s patience. Approach with an open mind – Sands of Aura is a beautiful but brutal world awaiting those seeking a hardcore combat challenge. Its retro-inspired masochism harkens to an era when games showed no mercy.

An Open World Brimming With Secrets, But Lacking Guidance

One of Sands of Aura’s great strengths comes from encouraging exploration across its melancholy open world. Your trusty grainwake ship serves as the gateway to sailing between islands scattered across the Great Sandsea. Each landmass promises its own self-contained adventures to uncover, adding to the mystery of Talamhel’s history. While exciting in theory, the lack of maps or waypoints hampers the noble aim of open exploration.

Sands of Aura Review

Your ultimate goal remains restoring life to the dying realm, but how you achieve that end through side journeys remains flexible. Narrative progress unlocks some new islands, but others can be discovered through free-roaming the sandseas early on. Every island holds environmental storytelling via ruins, architecture, and lore documents waiting to be uncovered. Piecing together the history of distinct civilizations that have risen and fallen elevates the intrigue. Since islands follow thematically unique designs, each expedition feels fresh.

Unfortunately, the absence of maps or waypoints generates needless frustration when navigating the islands. Getting turned around in a maze-like ruin or trying to locate that last interactable object becomes a chore without any guidance. A basic mapping system and quest log would have aided immensely in tracking goals. As it stands, journeying between islands offers too little direction, forcing tedious guesswork to make progress.

These issues bleed into the overarching narrative as well. The premise of saving Talamhel from corruption provides a broad main quest, but the structure around that feels loose and disjointed. Long stretches of grindy item farming separate major story beats, causing the plot momentum to stagnate. Limited guidance means losing sight of the next important objective. While open exploration sounds great on paper, Sands of Aura fails to provide the tools necessary to make it enjoyable and coherent.

The potential exists under the surface for an engaging open world action-RPG. But the lack of maps, waypoints, and quest tracking hamper the sense of adventure. Creating a cohesive narrative also suffers without better signposting between story milestones. Providing more user-friendly guidance could have allowed Sands of Aura’s strengths to fully flourish. As it stands, the aimless wandering leads to aimless confusion. With quality-of-life improvements, this melancholy realm could have achieved grander open world greatness. There are glimmers of brilliance, but more polish was required.

Allies Provide Lore But Gameplay Depth Is Missing

Amidst its lonely journeys, Sands of Aura offers some companion characters that add minor narrative flavor, though they fail to meaningfully impact the gameplay experience. The mystical spirit Aura appears early on, existing as a guide who unravels Talamhel’s history but provides no actual combat aid. Your undead sailor offers idle banter on your ship without influencing seafaring mechanics. While adding some welcome character touches, neither companion reshapes core gameplay loops in any substantive way.

Sands of Aura Review

More depth arises in the settlement management system tied to the sanctuary hub of Starspire. As you rescue refugees on your travels, they can be brought to settle in Starspire. Each new resident provides bonuses like better gear for sale. However, not every refugee has pure intentions. Choosing who to welcome opens up moral dilemmas that can shift the story based on your decisions. Maintaining your hub town offers an engaging distraction between battles.

Unfortunately the companion and town features feel disconnected from the main gameplay pillars of exploration and combat. Assisting allies in battles or meaningful side quests involving them could have better integrated these elements with the core mechanics. As supplementary narrative flavor, they hit the mark. But Sands of Aura misses an opportunity to leverage its characters and town for deeper gameplay. The ingredients are present but underutilized. With more interconnectivity between systems, side content could truly flourish rather than feeling like an afterthought.

A Flawed Jewel With Inspired Ideas but Messy Execution

Sands of Aura delivers an inspired vision hampered by messy execution. Within its sand-strewn world lies the framework for an alluring action-RPG experience. However, lack of polish and design oversights hold it back from fully realizing its potential. For patient fans of brutal combat challenges, there is fun to be mined from the game’s depths. But most players will bounce off its jagged edges.

Sands of Aura Review

At its best, Sands of Aura offers up an melancholy fantasy realm brimming with mystery. Exploring the remnants of ancient civilizations across the Sea of Sands allows the worldbuilding to flourish. Ferocious, unforgiving combat demands mastery of evasion, parries and precision strikes. With so many weapon components to discover, deep character customization rewards meticulous players. The satisfaction of finally conquering the toughest enemies proves worth the effort for those seeking hardcore tests of skill.

However, lengthy grinding to meet difficulty spikes disrupts narrative pacing and grows repetitive. Opaque quest tracking due to a lack of maps or waypoints transforms exploration into aimless wandering. Messy audio mixing and inconsistent voice acting diminish overall polish. These technical and structural flaws create needless friction that erodes enjoyment. With more care given to UI design, progression balancing, and presentation, Sands of Aura could have achieved its vision.

As it stands, only the most dedicated action gamers will look past the blemishes to appreciate what Sands of Aura gets right. More casual players or those seeking a smooth RPG adventure should look elsewhere. Yet there remains the foundation for something special amidst the flaws. With a bit more sanding off its rough edges, Sands of Aura could shine like a diamond. For now, its inspired ideas struggle to emerge through messy execution.

Approach Sands of Aura as a textbook case of intriguing concepts weighed down by the devil in the details. A captivating world and challenging combat model hold appeal for a niche audience. However, repetition, aimlessness, and lack of polish sap the overall fun factor for general action-RPG enthusiasts. It reaches for greatness but stumbles short of fully delivering. Sands of Aura is recommended only for gamers with ample patience and a high tolerance for frustration. With more polish, this could have been a buried treasure – instead it remains merely a glimmer of unfulfilled potential.

The Review

Sands of Aura

5.5 Score

Sands of Aura offers brief glimmers of soulful brilliance, but ultimately crumbles under the weight of its own ambition. For only the most hardened action-RPG veterans willing to grind through repetition and frustration, there are glints of fun buried deep within its sandy expanse. Yet clunky execution makes this a title better left entombed.
