Bloober Team Breaks Silence on “Disappointing” Silent Hill 2 Remake Trailer

Silent Hill 2 developer Bloober Team joins fans in criticizing the remake's misleading January trailer, saying it failed to capture the spirit of the psychological horror classic.

When Sony unveiled the first trailer for the hotly anticipated Silent Hill 2 remake during a January State of Play event, fans were left disappointed and underwhelmed. Rather than evoking the psychological horror and romanticism that defined the 2001 original, the combat-centric trailer felt closer to the maligned Silent Hill: Homecoming. It turns out fans weren’t alone in their criticism – developers at Bloober Team creating the remake didn’t care for the trailer either.

In a recent interview, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno distanced his studio from the divisive trailer, placing responsibility firmly on publisher Konami. “Certainly this trailer does not reflect the spirit of the game,” he remarked. “It is not the spirit of either what it used to be or what we are creating now.”

Babieno explained that while Konami handles marketing, Bloober Team is laser focused on maintaining the distinctive style and vision that made Silent Hill 2 an enduring classic. “We try to reflect this romantic vision of the game, which debuted 22 years ago,” he said. “We think that when players see real gameplay, the real game, they will evaluate it in a completely different way.”

Tyler Colp, associate editor at PC Gamer, expressed similar thoughts following the trailer’s premiere. While recognizing it represented only a small part of the overall package, he predicted a split response from diehard series fans. His prognosis proved correct, with some redditors defending the trailer as acceptable for early footage while others panned its emphasis on combat over psychological tension.

This isn’t the first indication of tensions between developer and publisher. Last November, Bloober Team publicly called out Konami over communication issues regarding the remake’s status. However, Babieno’s pointed criticism of the trailer may have overstepped behind-the-scenes boundaries. Shortly after the interview published, it was removed from the hosting platform entirely.

For now, details remain scarce and a release date still unset for Silent Hill 2. But Bloober Team’s mission seems clear: recapture the spirit of the original masterpiece without sacrificing their vision to Konami’s marketing missteps. Perhaps the next glimpse of footage will align more closely with what made Silent Hill 2 so uniquely haunting and memorable. At the very least, fans can trust the developers themselves have the game’s best interests at heart.
