HBO’s ‘10,000 Ships’ Charts Nymeria’s Exodus in Thrones Prequel Limbo

Brian Helgeland's ambitious vision to depict the founding of Dorne earned Martin's blessing but failed to set sail at HBO, at least for now.

While House of the Dragon brought Game of Thrones back to HBO and explored the deeper Targaryen dynasty history, another incredibly ambitious prequel series envisioning the mythical origins of Dorne hit stormy seas and has yet to receive a green light from the network.

Titled 10,000 Ships, the conception from acclaimed writer Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Man on Fire) aimed to dramatize the legendary journey of Queen Nymeria – a revered ancestral figure who led the Rhoynar people’s mass exodus to Dorne after their homeland was destroyed in the Second Spice War with the Valyrian Freehold.

Drawing inspiration from archetypal adventure narratives like The Odyssey and the biblical story of Moses, Helgeland’s pitch for the Game of Thrones prequel was an enthralling, high-concept blend of fantasy lore and ancient mythmaking.

As he revealed in a recent interview, the core premise centered on Nymeria commanding a vast flotilla of ships – the eponymous 10,000 vessels – carrying all the remaining Rhoynar civilization across an expansive fictionalized Mediterranean-styled setting after being displaced from Essos.

10,000 Ships

“Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria,” Helgeland explained. “Her country gets ruined and her people are forced to live on the water…They end up having to leave and find a new home like the Israelites leaving Egypt.”

The ambitious scale transcended a traditional seafaring tale too. Helgeland’s unique vision was for the Rhoynar to construct an entire floating refuge – “a raft city, a floating metropolis” representing the nomadic hopes of preserving an entire culture at sea as Nymeria led the search for a new homeland to settle.

Steeped in classic mythological metaphors of a pilgrimage against the odds, 10,000 Ships was poised to be a rich, thematic blend of high fantasy adventuring reminiscent of iconic works like Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad films. As Helgeland put it, “In a way, Nymeria is Odysseus, but instead of a 12-person crew, she’s responsible for every citizen in this floating city-state.”

10,000 Ships

While the pitch earned the endorsement of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin himself, HBO ultimately decided to pass on moving forward with 10,000 Ships as a full series. According to Helgeland, the network felt the concept’s historical setting was too far removed from the established Thrones timeline to serve as an effective prequel entry point for viewers.

However, Helgeland remains optimistic about the possibility of one day bringing Nymeria’s grand odyssey to life, affirming that “nothing is ever dead” when it comes to revisiting the project down the line. For now though, the storied Queen’s long journey across the narrow sea in search of a new kingdom will have to remain adrift – at least on HBO.
