‘Baby Reindeer’ Stars Beg Fans: “Stop Trying to Identify Real People”

Jessica Gunning and Richard Gadd implore audiences to focus on the powerful storytelling, not trying to identify people who may have inspired the Netflix hit.

The breakout stars of Netflix’s dark comedy thriller ‘Baby Reindeer‘ are making an impassioned plea to viewers: Stop trying to unmask the real individuals that inspired the fictionalized characters and storylines.

Jessica Gunning, who plays the obsessive stalker Martha on the hit limited series, has urged fans to appreciate the narrative for its powerful storytelling rather than treating it like an online puzzle to solve real identities.

“If you like the show and you are a fan of it, you should stick with the story of Martha and Donny being what connects you, not trying to do any detective work and find out any real identities,” Gunning stated in an interview.

She revealed that Netflix has gone to “great lengths” to protect the privacy of those whose personal experiences loosely inspired creator Richard Gadd’s semi-autobiographical scripts about stalking, sexual identity, and past abuse.

Gadd, who stars as the fictionalized version of himself named Donny, has been outspoken about how ‘Baby Reindeer’ borrows emotional truths rather than recreating any individual’s story verbatim.

“What’s been borrowed is an emotional truth, not a fact-by-fact profile of someone,” he explained.

However, rampant online speculation has already caught some industry figures in the crossfire, with unfounded theories spreading about who certain characters could be based on.

Gadd pleaded directly on social media, “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.”

The harassment even prompted actor and director Sean Foley to reveal police involvement over “defamatory abusive and threatening posts” falsely linking him to a character’s backstory.

As ‘Baby Reindeer’ continues enthralling audiences with its gripping, genre-blending exploration of disturbing themes, the creators make it clear – audiences should lose themselves in the powerful storytelling, not fruitless amateur sleuthing about potential real-world inspirations.
