Survival enthusiasts and town-building fans are about to get their hands on an enticing new title, as Donkey Crew’s Bellwright prepares to hit Steam Early Access this month. Set in a low fantasy world, the game promises to blend the thrill of survival, combat, and exploration with a deeply immersive storyline of intrigue and revolt.

Slated for release on April 23rd, Bellwright invites players to lead a burgeoning rebellion against a tyrannical Sovereign, liberating oppressed villages and uncovering the dark secrets of their own lineage. The process of building a settlement is described as a “slow yet completely engrossing” experience, with players meticulously constructing every building and structure, “one stick at a time.”

However, Bellwright offers a solution to this laborious task – the ability to recruit NPC followers who can assist in the town-building process. These AI-controlled settlers can take on tiresome chores like resource gathering and crafting, allowing players to focus on more strategic aspects of settlement development.

Beyond the town-building mechanics, Bellwright’s open world promises a wealth of exploration, combat, and survival challenges. Players will encounter people in need of help, as well as hostile foes like thugs, bandits, and wild animals that must be dealt with. Maintaining the basic needs of food, water, and rest for the player character is also a crucial part of the experience.

Donkey Crew, the studio behind the title, has assured that Bellwright will be a “multifaceted experience from day one” when it launches into Early Access. The developers expect the game to remain in Early Access for approximately three years, as they continue to refine the experience and add new content.

This announcement comes amidst the ongoing struggles of Donkey Crew’s previous title, the woodpunk survival MMO Last Oasis, which has been languishing in Early Access for far longer than initially promised. Some players have expressed concerns about the studio’s ability to deliver on its commitments, but the studio’s focus on Bellwright suggests a renewed determination to provide a polished and engaging experience for its community.

Bellwright’s blend of survival, town-building, and open-world exploration in a low fantasy setting is sure to pique the interest of many gamers seeking a unique and immersive experience. As the title embarks on its Early Access journey, all eyes will be on Donkey Crew to see if the studio can maintain its momentum and deliver on the promises made for this ambitious project.
