Uncovering the Opulent History Behind Netflix’s Heeramandi

The lavish period drama brings to life the fascinating world of Lahore's influential courtesans prior to British rule.

When it premieres on Netflix in May 2024, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious new series Heeramandi will transport viewers to a rich, vibrant world largely lost to history. The opulent period drama aims to authentically depict the lives of the influential courtesans who once reigned over Lahore’s fabled “diamond bazaar” district prior to British colonial rule in India.

While today Heeramandi is known as the red-light district of Lahore, Pakistan, the area has a storied past as a hub of arts, culture and power. During the Mughal era, Heeramandi – then called Shahi Mohalla or “The Royal Neighborhood” – was home to highly-trained courtesans known as tawaifs. These women were master artisans celebrated for their skills in classical Indian dance, music, poetry and more.

“Heeramandi was once a song and dance community based on the respected tawaif culture,” explains one report. The courtesans enjoyed immense prestige, regularly entertaining Mughal royalty and nobility who granted them elite status in society. Some tawaifs even became mistresses to their wealthy patrons or reportedly gave birth to royal heirs.

However, the arrival of colonial British rule in the 19th century brought dramatic changes. “The fall in grace of Heeramandi began with the British, who brought Western ideas of morality that pushed women down to the status of prostitutes,” notes one article. No longer the lavish “diamond bazaar,” Heeramandi earned the demeaning moniker “Market of Beauty” as wealthy men replaced royals as the prime patrons.

It’s this complex, multi-layered history that has drawn the attention of director Bhansali, known for lush historical dramas like Padmaavat. While previous projects like Gangubai Kathiawadi explored the lives of more recent courtesans, Heeramandi goes back over 200 years to the tawaifs’ height of influence and artistry.

Starring accomplished Indian actresses like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditi Rao Hydari, the series aims to dramatize everything from the courtesans’ cultural impact to their larger role in the Indian independence movement against British rule. One character is reportedly inspired by the real-life tawaif Aizzan Bai, who assisted local rebels in the 1857 uprising.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

In bringing this underexplored chapter of history to life, Bhansali intentionally avoids focusing on Heeramandi’s downfall into a red-light district. Instead, the series will showcase the opulent power dynamics, lavish excesses and uniquely matriarchal world that defined the era when these courtesans were among the most celebrated and influential figures across South Asia.

With his penchant for ornate set designs and sweeping romantic storylines, Bhansali’s signature larger-than-life directorial flair seems perfectly suited to recreate the grand, decadent setting of Heeramandi at its peak. The series promises a lush, immersive look at a dazzling center of art, politics and culture largely forgotten in the centuries since its decline.

As one profile notes, “Bhansali’s Heeramandi presents a rich concoction of history, music and culture to give a beautiful peek into the real lives of the courtesans who enjoyed great power and prominence.” When it premieres next year, Netflix’s lavish new drama looks poised to resurrect the ornate glory and significance of these real-life tawaif trailblazers.
