The ambitious remaster Ark: Survival Ascended continues fanning the flames of a divided community with its latest free content update drawing criticism for an included paid character download. While The Center map expansion has been largely celebrated for its impressive scale and dynamic environments, developer Snail Games has sparked backlash by offering the fierce fire-breathing Pyromane creature as a $4.99 microtransaction.
Revealed during the run-up to The Center’s launch across all platforms this week, the Pyromane emerged as the first premium “Fantastic Tame” available for purchase. A fierce lion-like beast able to alternate between full size and tiny shoulder-mounted forms, the formidable creature boasts unique offensive pyrokinetic abilities and enhanced mobility. However, many fans feel nickel-and-diming for an overpowered single character undermines the spirit of the acclaimed survival sandbox.
“A paid single animal at $5 is most likely the first of many to come,” lamented one particularly disgruntled player on Steam. “This feels like a major cash grab situation is headed our way.” Others have sarcastically derided the Pyromane as “pay-to-win,” criticizing its considerable advantages over the game’s base dinosaurs.
Such dissent isn’t entirely surprising given Ark: Survival Ascended’s contentious history. Derided by some as a glorified remaster following the scrapping of a once-promised full Ark 2 sequel, the refreshed take on the original 2017 release has struggled to uniformly win over fans. Paid microtransactions like the Pyromane seem unlikely to quell existing skepticism.
Still, the sprawling new Center map itself has garnered ample praise from the community, remastering the iconic fan-favorite location from the original game with full Unreal Engine 5 enhancements. Its diverse biomes, treacherous environments, and formidable bosses have been hailed as a substantial free addition catering to Ark’s dedicated base.
In an official statement, Snail Games’ Peter Kang affirmed “The Center expansion exemplifies our commitment to delivering rich and engaging content for Ark: Survival Ascended.” Whether that engagement extends to premium purchasable creatures remains to be seen based on the initial Pyromane blowback.
While controversy continues swirling, the developers appear set to trudge ahead – though perhaps evaluating the pricing strategy for future potential Fantastic Tames. As Ark’s remarkable world expands anew, finding the right balance between content and monetization will be crucial to sustaining the survival phenomenon’s imposing legacy.
