Operation Wolfhound: Unraveling the Nazi Nightmare

A Retro Metroidvania that Confronts the Darkest Secrets of the Third Reich

In the shadows of World War II, a top-secret Nazi experiment has unleashed a sinister scourge upon the world. Hideous mutated soldiers, twisted abominations of the human form, roam the depths of a mysterious island base in the Bermuda Triangle. The Allies’ bravest warriors have vanished without a trace after venturing too close to this diabolical den.

Only one man dares accept the mission to infiltrate the enemy stronghold and uncover the truth – Captain Chuck “Wolfhound” Rossetti, a one-man army whose battlefield exploits have etched his name into legend. Armed with conventional firearms, experimental weaponry, and a versatile jet-propelled suit, Wolfhound must descend into the heart of darkness and exterminate the grotesque horrors that await.

Wolfhound, an ambitious new retro-inspired Metroidvania from Bit Kid (developers of Chasm), transports players to an authentic 8-bit era riddled with challenging 2D gameplay mechanics and stunning pixel art visuals. Running at a crisp 320×180 native resolution with support for 4K displays, the game captures the iconic aesthetic of classic NES adventures with a chooseable CRT filter for that nostalgic glow.

“We’re aiming to be as authentic as possible, stylistically,” explains James Petruzzi, founder of Bit Kid. “An 8-bit color palette, pixel-perfect resolution, and a soundtrack composed in Famitracker for that true NES audio experience.”

But don’t let the retro vibe fool you – Wolfhound packs a serious punch with tight, modern gameplay and a massive, intricately hand-crafted world to explore across 10 interconnected areas. As Rossetti, players will wield an incredible arsenal that gradually expands from basic firearms to railguns, flamethrowers, and other cutting-edge ordnance of the era.

They’ll need every last ounce of firepower, too. In chilling underground lairs, crystalline caverns, and foreboding keeps, Wolfhound must confront both remnants of the Nazi war machine and their twisted biological experiments gone horrifically awry. Powering through these abominations will require not just brute force, but strategic thinking – upgrading weapons, scavenging for special ammunition types, and even modifying firearms themselves to gain that all-important edge.

ICYMI – Announcing Bit Kid's next adventure, WOLFHOUND! Infiltrate a mysterious Axis base in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle as one-man army Capt. Chuck “WOLFHOUND” Rossetti in this sci-fi WWII Metroidvania! https://t.co/SQEiHpiBEP pic.twitter.com/liYJaK2H0o

For Petruzzi, Wolfhound’s unusual premise of battling mutant Nazi monstrosities stems from a deeply personal place of honoring his grandfather’s wartime experiences. “He was a WWII vet who had recently died during Chasm’s development,” Petruzzi explains. “Going through his old photos, reading those brief captions he wrote about all the intense scenes he witnessed – that really inspired me to explore this storyline and era through Wolfhound’s lens.”

Bit Kid assembled an all-star lineup of industry talent to bring this haunting vision to life, including artists behind acclaimed titles like Shantae, Freedom Planet 2, and Sparklite. The rousing chiptune soundtrack thunders courtesy of Rushjet1 of Cave Story+ and Alwa’s Legacy fame.

With extraordinary creative pedigree, uncompromising retro authenticity, and a singularly compelling narrative backdrop, Wolfhound aims to blaze a new trail for the Metroidvania genre. Strap in for an unforgettable showdown against the darkest depravities of the Third Reich when this old-school action masterpiece storms onto PCs and the Steam Deck with full Linux support in the coming years.
