The world of adult animation is getting another serving of raunchy humor as “Sausage Party: Foodtopia,” the sequel series to the 2016 hit film “Sausage Party,” arrives on Amazon Prime Video. Creator and star Seth Rogen, along with returning cast members Kristen Wiig and Sam Richardson, have been dishing out behind-the-scenes details that shed light on the creative process and challenges of bringing this unconventional comedy to life.
The new eight-part series continues the story of sentient supermarket items in a world where humans have gone extinct. Rogen, who voices the main character Frank the sausage, revealed that the transition from film to series format has allowed for greater creative freedom. “I think television is so different than when we made the first movie and it allows for so much more in a lot of ways,” Rogen told The Hollywood Reporter. He added that the series format enables them to “take much bigger swings” with adult content compared to a feature film.
One of the most talked-about aspects of both the original film and the new series is their liberal use of film references and parodies. The fourth episode of “Foodtopia” features an unexpected and elaborate spoof of the critically acclaimed 2017 film “Call Me By Your Name.” Rogen shared with CinemaBlend the surprising difficulty in clearing the rights for this particular scene.
“That was actually a very hard song to clear,” Rogen explained, referring to Sufjan Stevens’ “Visions of Gideon” used in the parody. “We had to go to Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens both to personally sign off on the scene.” The comedian found himself in the unusual position of explaining the joke – which involves a character eating a foot while crying – to the very artists whose work was being parodied.
Surprisingly, both Guadagnino and Stevens approved the use of their work in this unconventional context. Rogen noted, “It’s not easy to get those people to sign off on that stuff, but they have a better sense of humor than you would think about things.”
The series also revisits one of the most notorious scenes from the original film – the food orgy. In a candid moment, Rogen admitted to using “real sex noises” during the recording of these scenes. “My first day recording, like, doing any sex noises, I was like, grunts. I’m like, ‘You guys are hearing my real sex noises,'” he confessed.
Despite the explicit content, Rogen reported that Amazon has been supportive of the project. Drawing parallels to another of the streaming giant’s adult-oriented hits, “The Boys,” Rogen stated, “If anything, they didn’t love how many food puns we were making, but other than that they were pretty ok with it. Amazon loves that. We’ve made them a lot of money with sex and violence.”
As “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” makes its debut, it stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of adult animation and the willingness of major streaming platforms to push boundaries.
