The Batman movie from earlier this year was pretty cool, right? It showed Batman as a gritty detective trying to save Gotham City. Director Matt Reeves wants to expand on that dark, mystery-filled world of Gotham. But not all of his plans are going to happen.
Some projects are moving ahead while others got canceled. Let me break down what we know so far about where the Batman franchise is going.
One thing we can look forward to is a new TV show focused on The Penguin character from the movie. Played brilliantly by Colin Farrell, Penguin will star in his own eight-episode series on HBO starting September 19th. The show’s creator, Lauren LeFranc, said it will bridge the gap between the first Batman movie and the planned sequel in 2026. So get ready to see more of Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham’s seedy underworld!
However, not everything is going so smoothly. Reeves had dreamed up two other TV shows – one about the Gotham City police and another at Arkham Asylum – but those ideas got scrapped. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Reeves explained how the Batman movie gave him inspiration for possible spin-offs. Though the cop show in particular sounded pretty juicy as a dark look at corruption.
Despite those cancellations, Reeves hopes elements from the unmade shows can sneak into The Penguin series. Only time will tell what exactly gets carried over. This expansion of Batman into television is part of a wider strategy we’re seeing more of lately. Other big franchises like Ninja Turtles, Dune and the Marvel movies are trying a similar approach. But it does make you wonder – will viewers need to watch all the shows to completely get future Batman movies?
We may learn more answers soon, as the cast and crew of The Penguin show will appear at Comic-Con in July. So stay tuned for additional updates on where Matt Reeves is steering Batman’s promising new movie and TV universe!
