Veteran British actor Hugo Weaving played the iconic elf lord Elrond in Peter Jackson’s blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy from 2001 to 2003. The films brought Tolkien’s world to life in a way that enthralled both dedicated fans and casual viewers worldwide. Now aged 64, Weaving has acknowledged how the extensive time spent embodying Elrond affected him, explaining why he has opted not to reprise the role or watch the latest Middle-earth series on Amazon Prime.
In a recent interview, Weaving noted that his depiction of Elrond in the six Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies spanned from 2001 to 2014. “I spent too long in Middle-earth, and I don’t particularly want to go back there,” he stated. While the role made him deeply familiar with J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings, Weaving remarked that after so much time between three lengthy film productions, he now views Elrond differently than passionate fans might.
The actor echoed comments from 2020, when he firmly refused the possibility of portraying Elrond again in The Rings of Power prequel show. “I’ve had more than enough of it,” Weaving said then. His remarks underscore how extensively researching and inhabiting the same character for over a decade affected his personal relationship to that fantasy world.
Though Weaving himself remains in the present, his graceful yet powerful performance as Elrond continues influencing Tolkien enthusiasts. Many online still celebrate his nuanced embodiment of the wise half-elf. Meanwhile, Rober Aramayo now steps into the role for the younger version seen in The Rings of Power, alongside Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel.
Beyond Middle-earth, fans can look forward to seeing Weaving in the upcoming season of the Apple TV+ spy series Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman. While Weaving may be moving on, The Rings of Power expands Tolkien’s vision anew for viewers, even without one of its most recognizable early leading men.
