Film director James Gunn has found a more efficient way to make blockbuster movies. Gunn, currently working on the upcoming Superman movie reboot, does extensive preparation before filming begins. This allows him to film all that is needed with minimal reshoots later on.
Gunn shared his process on social media recently. He said for his last two superhero films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, he completed just one day of reshoots combined. This is unlike typical big budget films that often spend weeks doing additional filming after the main shoot.
Gunn attributes his success to strong planning. He does not start filming until the whole script is complete and approved. Gunn also handpicks talented actors and staff. Extensive auditioning and background checks help ensure the right person for each role.
For Superman, Gunn selected David Corenswet in the title role. Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult were chosen as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Gunn said hiring the right actors is key so everyone understands their character. Additionally, he welcomes criticism from colleagues to improve ideas.
Principal filming for Superman wrapped in late July. However, Gunn noted the work is far from over. Months of editing, visual effects, sound design, and scoring still remain in the post-production stage.
By fully preparing scripts and roles before shooting, Gunn minimizes the need for costly reshoots later on. His approach challenges the conventional belief that reshoots are inevitable. If successful, it could influence how other big-budget films are made in Hollywood.
