Renowned director Denis Villeneuve shared new details about the “Dune” film franchise in a recent interview. Villeneuve helmed the first two “Dune” movies, which adapated Frank Herbert’s original novel. Both films earned widespread critical praise and box office success.

In his discussion, Villeneuve made clear he sees the first two “Dune” films as a complete telling of the original novel’s story. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book,” he stated. “That’s done and that’s finished.”

Villeneuve also provided insights into the planned adaptation of “Dune: Messiah,” based on Herbert’s second novel. He explained that this film would not be part of a trilogy connected to the first two. Instead, Villeneuve wants it to have its own distinct identity if he directs it.

“Dune: Messiah” continues the story 12 years after the orginal novel. However, the later “Dune” novels grow more philosophical and challenging to adapt to film. Villeneuve acknowledged this, noting they “become more and more esoteric.”

Most notably, Villeneuve indicated “Dune: Messiah” could be his last involvement with the franchise, as he may want to direct other projects. He expressed openness to other directors continuing the series in future films. Villeneuve aims to provide a foundation in “Messiah” that allows the story to progress under new vision.

The “Dune” universe is expanding beyond Villeneuve’s films, including a prequel TV series exploring the early history of the Bene Gesserit order. Key actors’ returns without Villeneuve also remain uncertain. “Dune: Messiah” currently has a script in development but no official release date. Fans can now stream the first two films as they await more on what’s next for the epic sci-fi franchise.
