Warner Brothers and DC have cast acclaimed Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts in the role of Krem, the main villain in their upcoming Supergirl movie “Woman of Tomorrow.” Schoenaerts, known for intense roles in films like “Rust and Bone” and “The Old Guard,” will play the comic book character who triggers Kara Zor-El’s journey to become Supergirl.
According to sources close to the production, the film will be based on Tom King’s comic run of the same name. It will tell the story of Kara after the destruction of her home planet Krypton. In the movie, Krem is said to murder the father of a young alien girl. This prompts Supergirl to get involved in her first heroic conflict.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, “Woman of Tomorrow” aims to provide a grittier portrayal of Supergirl than past adaptations. The movie will show the differences between Kara and Superman’s origins. Unlike her cousin, Kara witnessed the deaths of everyone around her for the first 14 years of her life before coming to Earth.
Schoenaerts is known for tackling complex themes and emotions in intense films such as “Rust and Bone,” for which he won a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actor. He has also starred in acclaimed dramas like “The Danish Girl,” “Red Sparrow,” and “The Old Guard.” Insiders say the versatile Schoenaerts is perfect for the antagonist role against the powerful but troubled Supergirl.
“Woman of Tomorrow” will be the second project overseen by the new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. It is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
