Netflix is expanding its Extraction franchise with a new television series starring Omar Sy, best known for his work in Lupin. The upcoming action thriller, produced by AGBO, will be set in the world established by the hit Extraction films, which starred Chris Hemsworth as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake.
The series, which has yet to receive an official title, will span eight episodes and follow Sy as a mercenary on a high-risk mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Caught in a conflict between warring factions and facing ruthless adversaries, the character will confront personal trauma and betrayal. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield) serves as showrunner and executive producer, overseeing the project alongside Anthony and Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, Chris Castaldi, Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we expand the Extraction universe,” Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of scripted series, said. “With Omar Sy leading the charge and Glen Mazzara at the helm, fans can expect the kind of high-energy storytelling they appreciate from this franchise.”
The Extraction franchise began with the 2020 film directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks. The original movie followed Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake as he attempted to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord in Bangladesh. Following its success, Netflix released Extraction 2 in 2023, continuing Rake’s dangerous missions in a new setting.
Netflix has previously adapted the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film trilogy into the series XO, Kitty and is also developing a Peaky Blinders feature film based on the television series.
Glen Mazzara expressed enthusiasm about the project, calling himself “a very lucky man” and praising the opportunity to work with Sy and the creative team at AGBO and Netflix. Angela Russo-Otstot also emphasized the production company’s interest in telling additional stories within the Extraction world, stating, “We were motivated to explore more narratives in this global franchise, focusing on complex mercenaries with universal themes.”
Omar Sy’s involvement signals another major role for the French actor, who gained worldwide recognition through Lupin, one of Netflix’s most successful non-English-language series. He will also appear in French Lover, another upcoming Netflix project.
The new Extraction series continues AGBO’s collaboration with Netflix, which has included The Gray Man and the upcoming film The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, set to premiere on March 14.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the Extraction series, but production is expected to move forward in the coming months.
