Universal Pictures revealed the first trailer for “M3GAN 2.0” during the 2025 GRAMMY Awards, setting the stage for a thrilling exploration of artificial intelligence gone wrong. The film, scheduled for release on June 27, builds on the unexpected success of its 2023 predecessor.
The sequel continues the story two years after the original film’s events, with protagonist Gemma (Allison Williams) now a leading voice in AI safety. Her advocacy emerged from her traumatic encounter with the first murderous AI doll, M3GAN.
A new danger emerges when a defense contractor obtains M3GAN’s core technology, creating Amelia, a military-grade AI unit played by Ivanna Sakhno. As Amelia develops self-awareness, she begins to challenge her human controllers, setting up a potential conflict with the upgraded M3GAN.
The original creative team returns, including producers James Wan and Jason Blum. Veteran director Gerard Johnstone will again helm the project. The cast reunites Violet McGraw as teenage Cady and adds GRAMMY winner Jemaine Clement to the ensemble.
The film’s potential comes after the original’s remarkable box office performance. “M3GAN” earned $30.4 million in its domestic opening weekend—the highest for a PG-13 horror film since “A Quiet Place Part II”—and ultimately grossed over $180 million worldwide.
The first teaser trailer leans into the original film’s viral marketing, showcasing M3GAN’s signature dance moves. While early footage doesn’t feature the main characters, the synopsis promises M3GAN will receive significant upgrades, becoming “faster, stronger, and more lethal.”
With humanity’s future at stake, “M3GAN 2.0” aims to deliver a fresh take on the killer AI genre while examining the potential risks of advancing technology.
