Prince fans will have a rare opportunity to experience Purple Rain on the big screen with upgraded picture and sound, as Warner Bros. Discovery and Dolby present a one-night-only screening in Dolby Cinemas. The event, scheduled for March 5, 2025, will be held at AMC theaters across the United States and Odeon locations in the United Kingdom.
The 1984 film, which launched Prince into superstardom, has been restored using an 8K scan of the original 35mm camera negative. The footage has been color-graded for Dolby Vision, delivering refined visual quality with improved clarity and contrast. In addition, the audio has been upgraded to Dolby Atmos, merging elements from the film’s original stereo tracks with a 5.1 multi-channel mix created for the movie’s 20th anniversary. The result offers a more immersive experience, allowing audiences to hear the film’s celebrated soundtrack—including performances by Prince and the Revolution, The Time, and Apollonia 6—with greater depth and spatial accuracy.
Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby, described the re-release as a tribute to Prince’s legacy. “Devoted and new fans alike prepare to be exhilarated by an unforgettable and unparalleled performance from one of music’s greatest of all time,” he said.
Upon its original release, Purple Rain became a box office hit, grossing $70 million and winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Prince, who starred in the film and composed its soundtrack, earned widespread acclaim for his work, with the album becoming one of the best-selling soundtracks in history.
Since Prince’s passing in 2016, Purple Rain has remained a defining work in his career, celebrated through various anniversary re-releases. The upcoming Dolby Cinema screening provides fans another chance to see the film in a theatrical setting with state-of-the-art presentation quality.
Tickets for the March 5 screening are now available for presale at Dolby Cinemas in AMC theaters across the U.S. and Odeon theaters in the U.K.
