Gunn Earns Standing Ovation for Superman at SDCC

Director’s emotional remarks and roaring ovations signal growing confidence in DC Studios after Superman’s box-office breakout.

James Gunn returned to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday to thunderous applause, delivering his first public comments since Superman passed the $200 million mark at North American box offices. The standing ovation erupted in the 6,000-seat Hall H during a panel focused on Peacemaker season 2, a show that grew out of the director’s earlier DC work.

Star John Cena amplified the atmosphere by marching on stage in full Peacemaker gear and saluting the director, calling him “our captain” before inviting fans to join the salute. Gunn later told the crowd, “Today has been the most fun day I’ve had in a year,” crediting the room’s energy for reviving him after an intense production schedule. Footage teased an alternate-dimension storyline that pits the helmeted antihero against a shinier version of himself, set to a newly unveiled theme song.

Hours later the filmmaker surprised the “Jim Lee & Friends” session, where he grew emotional while praising the art team behind Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic slated to anchor DC Studios’ next feature. Supporters in the room again rose to their feet, a response Gunn said reminded him of attending his first convention as a child in St. Louis.

A DC press statement issued before the convention had hinted at unnamed guests yet kept Gunn’s appearance under wraps, fuelling speculation across social media in the days leading up to the show. The same notice confirmed that Peacemaker season 2 will arrive on Max on 21 August, with several Superman characters expected to appear; a brief trailer shown in Hall H featured Cena trading insults with a doppelgänger to Foxy Shazam’s “Oh Lord.” Comic-Con organisers reported that Hall H reached capacity an hour before the panel, marking the event’s busiest Saturday since 2022.

Superman opened on 11 July and now stands at $217 million worldwide, giving Gunn his strongest commercial launch as co-head of DC Studios; industry analysts said the Comic-Con reaction underlines audience confidence in his long-range slate.
