Iran has selected Cause of Death: Unknown, directed by Ali Zarnegar, as its official submission for the Academy Award for best international feature. The decision was announced by the country’s selection committee, which operates under national industry bodies that coordinate submissions in line with Academy rules. The title had appeared on Iran’s circulated shortlist in recent days before being confirmed.
Zarnegar’s drama centers on seven travelers crossing Iran’s Lut Desert who discover a fellow passenger has died, only to be told no ambulance will come without a doctor’s declaration. As daylight fades, the group faces a bureaucratic impasse and a moral test, a premise the filmmakers have presented at international showcases this year.
The film arrives with a modest festival record: it won best cinematography in the Asian New Talent section at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival; later screenings included the Iranian Film Festival New York and a prize at the Iranian Film Festival Zurich. Its U.S. playdates included IFC Center’s winter program.
The selection follows Iran’s first-ever public shortlist for the category, which included Call Me Ziba, The Old Bachelor, Raha, and Woman and Child alongside Zarnegar’s film. The country’s submission process has been under renewed scrutiny, with industry press noting a return of the House of Cinema’s role and state outlets detailing awards gathered by the shortlisted titles abroad. The move comes in a year when an Iranian feature won the Cannes Palme d’Or, underscoring how the nation’s cinema has been visible on the global stage across a range of viewpoints and production contexts.
