Michael Keaton used a journalism gala to offer condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family and to urge restraint, saying “shooting people will never answer anything” and calling it “unbelievable” that Kirk was killed with a gun. He prefaced the remarks by noting that he often disagreed with Kirk’s views but wanted the room to remember that the 31-year-old left behind a wife and two children. The comments, delivered Monday night, circulated online alongside paraphrases from attendees.
Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking outdoors at Utah Valley University. Authorities say a single round from a rooftop struck him in the neck as he took questions from the crowd. A 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, was arrested two days later after relatives contacted law enforcement. Investigators have pointed to a mix of digital and forensic leads, including messages on the chat platform Discord that appeared to acknowledge responsibility and items recovered near the firing position. Officials have said they believe the suspect acted alone.
Court proceedings are moving ahead in Provo. Prosecutors planned to file formal charges on Tuesday, with the defendant expected to appear by video from jail for an initial hearing. State officials have indicated they will consider capital punishment, subject to the wishes of the family. Federal authorities are reviewing potential additional counts as the investigation continues.
Keaton’s comments landed amid broader debate over political violence, free speech and access to firearms. Reporters in the room described the tone as reflective rather than partisan, with an emphasis on the human toll as well as the national climate around public events. Separate reporting has documented how graphic footage of the shooting spread quickly online and how investigators traced communications in the hours before and after the attack, including an apparent Discord admission: “It was me at UVU yesterday.”
Authorities have not publicly assigned a definitive motive. Investigators and state officials have cited online activity, interviews with associates, and physical evidence gathered at the scene as they continue to build the case. A hearing schedule and charging documents are expected to clarify the path forward in the coming days.
