Trump’s post also revisited Clooney’s 2024 New York Times essay urging then-President Joe Biden to step aside, ridiculing Clooney’s support for Kamala Harris and sneering at his film résumé as “totally mediocre,” adding that Clooney “wasn’t a movie star at all.” Clooney has criticized Trump for years, and the two men’s history has periodically resurfaced in interviews as the actor has promoted recent projects.
The flare-up followed France’s publication of a naturalization decree covering the Clooneys and their 8-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander. The family bought a property in France in 2021, and Clooney has described their “farm in France” as their primary home, citing a desire to raise the children away from the Hollywood spotlight. French media have reported the couple keeps a low profile near Brignoles in southern France, where strict privacy rules protect children from unauthorized photographs.
French officials have defended the decision amid local criticism that celebrity applicants receive preferential treatment. A junior interior minister questioned the fairness of granting citizenship to a high-profile couple, while the government said the Clooneys qualified under a provision that allows naturalization for foreigners seen as strengthening France’s international influence; officials pointed to George Clooney’s cultural impact and Amal Clooney’s professional work with institutions in France. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said he signed the decree and called it “a big chance for our country.”
