Sony Pictures Television’s neo-Western drama “Marshals” released its first Season 2 trailer this week, giving fans a look at where the “Yellowstone” spinoff picks up after a finale that left two lead characters in a shootout and left star Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, and his son Tate in danger. Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, with episodes also streaming on Paramount+.
The trailer confirms that Pete “Cal” Calvin, played by Logan Marshall-Green, and Isabel “Belle” Skinner-Turek, played by Arielle Kebbel, survived the Season 1 shootout that closed out the series’ first run. Beyond confirming their survival, the footage suggests the two marshals have grown closer personally since the incident. Grimes appears throughout the trailer in signature Kayce Dutton fashion, including one shot of him scaling a moving train while armed, and another astride a horse overlooking the Montana landscape, where he delivers a line framing the Dutton family’s story as one defined by constant conflict rather than land itself.
“Marshals” follows Kayce Dutton after he leaves the family’s East Camp ranching operation behind to join an elite U.S. Marshals unit tasked with protecting Montana, blending his background as a Navy SEAL with the skills he built as a rancher. The show launched as a spinoff of “Yellowstone” in March, debuting without Kayce’s wife Monica, whose death from cancer in the premiere episode became the catalyst for his career change. Grimes has said he initially turned down the role three times before agreeing to lead the series.
The premiere drew 20.6 million viewers on Paramount platforms within a week, a performance CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach called a breakout that established the show as one of television’s strongest new series and made it the most-streamed original series premiere in the network’s history. That audience made “Marshals” the top-performing network drama debut without a football lead-in since “Young Sheldon” in 2017, prompting the network to fast-track its renewal announcement in March.
The Season 2 cast includes returning marshals unit members Andrea Cruz, played by Ash Santos, and Miles Kittle, played by Tatanka Means, alongside Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty as Kayce’s confidants from the Broken Rock reservation. Taylor Sheridan, who created the original “Yellowstone” universe, serves as an executive producer on the spinoff.
