Hulu has confirmed the identity of the shooting victim left unnamed at the end of “Reasonable Doubt” season three, revealing in a new trailer that series lead Jax Stewart was the target of a gunshot fired by her rival Monica.

The season four trailer, released Tuesday, shows Jax, played by Emayatzy Corinealdi, hospitalized and hooked to life-saving equipment following the attack. Her husband, Lewis Stewart, played by McKinley Freeman, is shown at her bedside, while Corey Cash, played by Morris Chestnut, urges her to keep fighting. “I don’t know if you can hear me or not, but I need you to fight,” he says. “Fight like I know your ass love to do.” Lewis adds later in the trailer, “This is not the end of your story. It can’t be.”

The season three finale ended with Monica, played by Brandee Evans, storming into Jax’s newly formed practice, The Stewart Firm, and firing a gun, leaving her fate deliberately ambiguous. The new footage confirms Monica pulled the trigger on Jax and shows her now facing prosecution from county jail. The official season four synopsis describes a firm reeling from the fallout: Jax’s most loyal client is caught in a media crisis just as the practice tries to hold itself together.

Season four premieres Oct. 6 with three episodes on Hulu and Disney+, followed by new installments weekly through late November. The season expands its cast with two new series regulars, R&B artist Durrell “Tank” Babbs as wealthy client Eric Cropper and Meagan Good as incoming district attorney Regina Harris. La La Anthony, Taylor Polidore Williams and Rutina Wesley join in recurring roles, while Chestnut, Joseph Sikora and Evans return as guest stars.

Created and written by Raamla Mohamed Hunter, “Reasonable Doubt” is executive produced by Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone through their Simpson Street banner, along with Larry Wilmore, Tamara Gregory and Anton Cropper. The show was renewed for a fourth season last November as part of Hulu’s Onyx Collection, a banner dedicated to Black creators and stories.
