The small island of Sker saw terrible events unfold in the supernatural horror game Maid of Sker. Players explored an abandoned hotel overwhelmed by dark forces and undead occupants. Its sequel Sker Ritual leaves the stealthy frights behind for frenetic four-player co-op action. Taking place after Maid of Sker’s most disturbing ending, players join the character Arianwen to battle the zombie-like Quiet Ones terrorizing Sker once more.

This time around the formula is familiar – players select from available maps and survive waves of enemies between completing objectives. Moving through decaying buildings and creepy forests, teams work together to rid Sker of the growing threat. Money earned through combat may be spent on improved weapons, skills boosts, and unlocking new areas. But with each new zone open comes a tougher fight. Slowly the Quiet Ones evolve, requiring nimbler tactics and well-timed teamwork to outmaneuver.

While embracing enjoyable co-op play, Sker Ritualborrows heavily from the formula of multiplayer zombie modes popularized by Call of Duty. Its haunted island setting gives a fresh horror coat of paint though mechanics remain standard fare for genre veterans. Technical problems can also disrupt the action. But for those seeking a scrumptious slice of scary survival action with friends, Sker Ritual’s creepy cooperative gameplay should tide them over for a while.

The Cursed Isle

Dark forces still grip Sker Island. In the wake of Maid of Sker’s evil conclusion, the island finds itself in deeper turmoil. Elizabeth Williams now wields the threatening power of the Siren’s Song, tightening her control and spreading chaos across the land. Yet not all hope is lost – her daughter Arianwen stands defiant against the growing shadows.

Players find themselves drawn into Arianwen’s fight as the story continues. All is not as it seems on this cursed isle. Hidden menaces lurk around every crumbling structure and twisting forest path. Ancient evils long dormant are now stirring once more. As Arianwen seeks to rally aid in resisting her mother’s foul magic, it falls to players to support her cause. Exploration brings danger at each turn, but it may also reveal clues to ending the island’s decades-long curse.

Various locales await across Sker’s forlorn shores. Dense woodlands cloak unraveling secrets among towering sentinels. Abandoned villages retain an unsettled atmosphere from horrors that once filled their streets. Even the open coast proves treacherous, with risen dead emerging from the pounding surf. Most unnerving of all are the ruins of Stirwick Hotel. It was here that the curse first took root all those years ago. Though gutted by fire, the hotel’s wings still stand – a foreboding labyrinth where unspeakable acts changed the island’s destiny.

One will need steady nerves to survive all that Sker Island now shadows in its bounds. But by facing the terrors within its maps together, perhaps players can rewrite the place’s fate and set all souls therein to rest at long last.

Round-Based Horror on Sker Island

Waves of enemies spill forth from the foggy woods, shuffling towards you with outstretched arms. You and your squad stand ready with a modest arsenal. As gunfire erupts, bullets fly in chaotic bursts. The first wave falls, littering the field with corpses.

Sker Ritual Review

But there is little time to rest— a second wave soon emerges, tougher than before. Working together, you overcome this challenge and the next, steadily upgrading your firepower along the way. Between attacks, safe spaces offer opportunities to strategize and replenish supplies for the next onslaught. Such is the rhythmic gameplay cycle of Sker Ritual.

Set on the ominous shores established in Maid of Sker, this co-op shooter delivers an old-school experience with modern flourishes. Players complete objectives across four standalone maps while fending off relentless zombie hordes.

A selection of period weapons become steadily more formidable thanks to cash earned from fallen foes. It funds improvements at workbenches between rounds. Players also enhance capabilities through Miracles—randomly uncovered powers that upgrade melee, grenades or healing over time. Variables emerge from experimenting with different builds.

Coordinating attacks alongside friends amplifies the fun, whether reviving downed allies or managing respawn tokens. Communication streamlines strategies against tougher opponents. Yet the solo mode proves no less compelling, with adaptability key to survival.

Regrettably, aiming feels somewhat loose and enemy damage excessive later on. Still, overcoming each challenge through smart upgrades keeps the multiplayer entertaining long after credits roll. With online play, secret areas to uncover and gameplay that constantly refreshes, Sker Ritual promises many more nights of round-based horror.

Sker Island’s Mysteries Unveiled

Each of Sker Ritual’s maps presents its own thrilling challenge on Sker Island. Players will explore dark forests, abandoned buildings and other haunted locations while working to complete objectives. This could mean charging mysterious coils, collecting cursed music boxes or defending excavation sites from the approaching hordes.

Sker Ritual Review

Objectives not only drive the narrative forward, but also must be completed within time limits as the threats intensify in each new wave. Starting with only a basic pistol, resources earned from defeating enemies can upgrade weapons and uncover new areas of each map. Careful resource management is key to completing missions before becoming overwhelmed.

As players push their limits, Sker Ritual’s Dread Levels and Sker Pass systems unlock greater rewards. By reaching higher difficulties, unique weapons, items and cosmetic upgrades become available. The Sker Pass also offers seasonal bonuses, rewarding exploration and milestone achievements within competitive timeframes. This constant progression ensures the action remains fresh in each new attempt.

Hidden throughout the maps are also delightful surprises awaiting discovery. Behind false walls or down unmarked paths, players may find clever references to folklore or unlock rare loot. Exploring every crevice of Sker Island holds the thrill of mysterious revelations alongside zombie battles. Even playing with others, friendly competition emerges to uncover the island’s best kept secrets first.

With each challenging encounter, Sker Ritual keeps players venturing deeper into the island’s mysteries. Its evolving maps, rewarding progression and delightful secrets make every exploration an exciting new chapter in horror history.

Immersive Vistas and Eerie Soundscapes

What truly brought the horrors of Sker Island to life were the meticulously crafted environments. Each locale felt distinctly unique thanks to vivid artistic touches – from gnarled forests shrouded in mist, to decrepit halls holding untold secrets within aged stone walls. It’s clear no detail was overlooked, down to flickering candles illuminating dusty manuscripts left behind by those who came before.

Sker Ritual Review

Players could become fully engrossed in the atmosphere thanks to the island’s memorable aesthetics. Subtle visual cues hinted at past tragedies while generating intrigue about the obscure history of this secluded place. Recurring ominous motifs added another layer of unease, instilling in players a sense that something sinister still lurked beneath the surface.

Equal attention was paid to the foes lurking throughout each setting. The warped creatures exhibited unsettling organic designs which blended aspects of the human and inhuman. Their unnatural features alone were enough to send chills down one’s spine. Yet it was how intricately these terrors were brought to life via intricate animated sequences and reactive sound that truly made them feel alive with malice.

No less impressive were the audio accomplishments underpinning the entire experience. From stark ambient tracks, to pulse-pounding combat music – sonic elements seamlessly shifted to match the rising tension. The unearthly groans and shrieks of opponents were also unforgettable.

Their distressed vocalizations bursting forth from hidden corners never failed to trigger an adrenaline rush. Voice performances for main characters similarly enriched scenarios with nuanced deliveries that deepened one’s connection to unfolding revelations.

Together, these technical triumphs enabled the foreboding world of Sker Island to become a true haven for tangible atmosphere where visual grandeur and unsettling audio combined to mesmerizing effect. Thanks to such artistic mastery, players were immersed in a memorable fright-fest that engaged their senses on multiple levels.

Behind the Scenes Battles

While Sker Ritual delivers thrills aplenty when things run smoothly, technical troubles also lurk behind the scenes. Upon starting a match, lag or crashes are common frustrations that can disrupt the experience. Even during active play, frame rates may take a tumble when explosions erupt en masse. It seems the game engine struggles under duress, sputtering when stress levels peak.

Sker Ritual Review

Bugs likewise lie in wait to pester players. One review mentioned friends passing through walls after dying, unable to be revived. In another case, progress was lost entirely due to crashes at map conclusions. Quality assurance doesn’t seem to have caught such quirks. Connecting to online matches brings its own vexations too. Frequent disconnections leave survivors stranded, invalidating efforts with no reward. A ‘forever ghost’ state even trapped one player after all fled.

Balancing issues compound the technical trials. Solo players flounder without allies to revive them, while incomplete teams find danger overwhelms. Everyone would benefit from stable servers ensuring full complements cooperate as intended. As is, unreliable technology threatens the threatened experience more than any horror within.

While the foundations show promise, lurking bugs and instability mar potentially monster-mashing mayhem. Imagine how much scarier things could get if the code stood as stalwart as the characters strive to be! With polish and fine-tuning, this undead uprising may yet rise from the ashes of its flaky launch. For now, only the bravest become veterans of its behind-the-scenes battles.

A Shambling Joyride Worth Taking

Sker Ritual provides a solid multiplayer FPS experience with some notable strengths, though it has room to sharpen its skillset. Where the game excels is in delivering fast-paced cooperative action against ever tougher zombie hordes. Wave after wave keeps tension high as players frantically fend off assaults from all sides. Working as a team and strategizing upgrades together creates many memorable moments.

Sker Ritual Review

The developers clearly invested in variety with randomized perk drops and diverse map locales. Exploring a lush forest, say, and discovering its hidden paths makes for delightful diversion from the undead onslaught. Collection challenges and secret areas to uncover also encourage replayability. Gunplay feels impactful enough to satisfy first-person fanatics. Graphics utilize the atmosphere of dread quite nicely too.

On the other hand, some flaws do exist. Objectives could provide more direction at times. Repetition can set in with limited map selection as well. Technical hiccups also disrupt momentum occasionally. While not a total lost cause, mechanics seem somewhat standard and cry out for more tailoring.

Ultimately, Sker Ritual delivers a solid foundation of zombie carnage best enjoyed with company. It succeeds in crafting stress-inducing sessions worth seeing through to the end. However, the experience would truly shine with some polish and depth added to gun customization or mission design. As is, the game certainly satisfies for a casual cooperative romp, especially if you check expectations at the door. Horror aficionados in search of a buzzing new multiplayer time-sink would be remiss not to take this shambling joyride.

The Review

Sker Ritual

6 Score

Sker Ritual delivers a fun and frantic zombie shooter experience best enjoyed with friends, though it lacks the refinement to satisfy dedicated fans. The competitive action maintains excitement wave after wave, and perks keep runs fresh, but technical faults and barebones design hold it back from greatness. Ultimately, Sker Ritual is a serviceable way to pass the time with chums in a chaotic world gone wrong. However, it feels like an imperfect imitation of classics rather than a cornerstone in its own right.

PROS

  • Intense cooperative multiplayer gameplay
  • Satisfying gunplay and combat
  • Randomized perks add replayability
  • Detailed environments to explore

CONS

  • Objectives could be more clear
  • Limited map selection leads to repetition
  • Technical issues disrupt gameplay
  • Shallow mechanics and design
