Fans of One Piece can look forward to some news about One Piece Odyssey. The JRPG now has a detailed developer video with some fresh information tidbits. It shows new gameplay, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the game, and also reveals new information about the battle system, the exploration of the game world, and a lot more.
One Piece has a focus on story, exploration and turn-based combat
This is what it’s all about: One Piece Odyssey is going to be a true JRPG. In other words, we’ll be able to explore a large game world, enjoy a fresh, original story, meet new characters, and also have fun with a completely new battle system. This focuses less on real-time action and focuses more on turn-based battles. Now a developer diary video goes into even more detail.

The focus is on the story
According to the people behind One Piece Odyssey, story is the main focus here. They don’t want to reveal more at the moment, but the phrase “Journey to the Heart of Memory”, which is featured in a trailer, is in direct connection with the concept of the game. In addition, there are two completely new characters designed by Eiichiro Oda, and also completely new animals like the Leviathan or the Dry Penguin.
Exploration with the characters
Among the biggest surprises from the new video is the revelation that we’ll be able to switch between characters even while we move through the game world. In some cases, we even have to do this to reach certain places or remove obstacles from the way. Shown are various dungeons, ruins and the overworld.
Turn-based combat system
Also new and exciting are the twists in the JRPG combat system. There is, for example, the possibility to position our characters differently, which is supposed to have a significant effect on the fights themselves and their outcome. Additionally, so-called “dramatic scenes” are scheduled, which will occur more or less randomly and represent character-specific extra challenges.
When will One Piece Odyssey be released?
Officially, there is no precise release date for One Piece Odyssey yet. However, up until now, it is said that the JRPG will be released in 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The video also reveals that One Piece Odyssey has already been in development for five years, so the odds are good that the launch will really be soon.
