It has been a little more than a week since the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, and the Box Office results of James Cameron’s latest masterpiece are coming in daily from around the world.
Sequel to the most profitable cinema production in history is performing really well and is not slowing down at all. As of today (Monday, December 26), according to the Mojo Box Office website, the film Avatar: The Way of Water had already earned $881.4 million.
Its world premiere took place on December 16, so that’s a really good result. Already, the new part of Avatar ranks as the 5th highest-grossing film of 2022. The throne is still occupied by Top Gun Maverick with earnings of $1 billion and $489 million.
The result reported means that The Being of Water has surpassed the Box Office results of the film Black Panther: Wakanda in my heart.
Marvel’s production only earned $801.2 million, even though it premiered more than a month before the new Avatar.
Though analyses indicate that Cameron’s new work won’t match the 2009 hit, for the moment the sequel is doing much better on American soil than the first installment.
After 11 days of release, an original Avatar earned only $232.1 million in the US. The second installment has already generated around $279.7 million in the US. Where, therefore, lies the success of the 2009 film?
Well, the highest grossing film in history was released in theaters from December 2009 to August 2010. But it’s hard to imagine the second installment hosting such a long run on the big screen.
