Disney has three more opportunities to revive the Star Wars brand’s cinematic success. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s supervision, the once-thriving franchise has struggled.
A reboot is expected to take shape with three new Star Wars films. One will be set long before the prequel trilogy, another has fans calling it “Episode 10,” and a third film aims to bring the heroines of the Mandoverse to the big screen.
Dave Filoni’s Upcoming Star Wars Film
Dave Filoni, an American producer, screenwriter, director, and voice actor, has been with Lucasfilm since 2008. Initially focusing on the animated side of the Star Wars universe, Filoni became involved in live-action series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka after Disney Plus launched in 2019.
Filoni’s forthcoming film aims to merge all four Mandoverse series onto the big screen. Along with the previously mentioned shows, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, starring Hollywood actor Jude Law, is set to debut in summer or fall 2023. With Darth Vader no longer in the picture, a new antagonist is necessary.
The Potential New Villain in the Star Wars Universe
From an interview with Dave Filoni, it appears that the planned villain for Star Wars: Ahsoka could also be the main antagonist in the new movie. Grand Admiral Thrawn, a character from Timothy Zahn’s bestselling and now-canon novels, has become iconic.
Grand Admiral Thrawn, or Mitth’raw’nuruodo, will make his live-action debut in the upcoming Star Wars series: Ahsoka.
Danish actor Lars Dittmann Mikkelsen, who previously voiced Thrawn in Star Wars: Rebels and is the older brother of Mads Mikkelsen, will take on the challenging role.
When questioned about the primary villain of the Mandoverse era, Filoni confirmed that it is “definitely” Grand Admiral Thrawn. Filoni stated, “When Timothy Zahn wrote ‘Heir To The Empire,’ Thrawn became this iconic villain because he was unlike anything we’d seen before.”
