The Next Lord of the Rings MMO: Amazon Games Teams Up with New World Developer

A Bold Venture into Middle-earth in its Early Development Phase

Amazon Games, the creative force behind the New World, has joined forces with the Embracer Group’s Middle-earth Enterprises to breathe life into a fresh massively multiplayer online game (MMO) grounded in the universe of The Lord of the Rings. This venture marks a new chapter in the realm of gaming, especially for the fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy world.

This forthcoming MMO is set to carve its path, entirely distinct from the 2007’s The Lord of the Rings Online and the previously aborted Lord of the Rings MMO by Amazon. Currently, the game is in its infancy of development, bearing no official title to date.

The Trailblazers Behind the Project

Lord of the Rings

The development of this new Middle-earth MMO is spearheaded by the Amazon Games Orange County, the same team that masterminded New World. It is slated for release on both PC and consoles. Although a precise release schedule remains undisclosed, Amazon Games assures fans that the narratives from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be integral to the game experience.

“Every possible measure is being taken to craft an MMO that embodies the vastness of the Middle-earth universe and captivates players globally,” they commented.

The Aspirations and Challenges of a New Lord of the Rings MMO

“We have always aspired to offer players an innovative interpretation of The Lord of the Rings, and we are immensely honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this legendary world,” expressed Christoph Hartmann, Vice President of Amazon Games.

In a conversation with IGN, Hartmann clarified that the forthcoming project is a novel approach to a Lord of the Rings MMO, explicitly stating that it will not draw from any elements of the previously cancelled Amazon project.

“It’s an entirely new venture,” he emphasized, adding, “The old project had not been under development for a long period. It was a relatively small team focusing on a specific aspect of the game, but it wasn’t a full-scale production.”

The team at Amazon Games radiates confidence in their potential to manifest a top-tier MMO, acknowledging only technological boundaries as potential constraints.

Creating a Unique Gaming Experience

Lord of the Rings

“This is an entirely unique game as the license scope is significantly broader,” Hartmann elaborated. “Given the fixed nature of the world and characters, our creative freedom primarily lies in gameplay features where the realm of possibilities is boundless, limited only by what is technically achievable.”

He added, “Previously, we often found ourselves saying, ‘it’s a good idea but we can’t implement it due to other commitments.’ Now, with Embracer and Middle-earth Enterprises fully supporting our mission, we are determined to develop the most ambitious and best MMO based on Lord of the Rings.”

Echoing this sentiment, Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode, the operative group of Middle-earth Enterprises, reinforced their commitment. “We’re taking every measure to create an MMO that will do justice to the vast Middle-earth universe and thrill players worldwide,” he stated.

Setting the goal of becoming the most significant and best MMO based on Lord of the Rings puts this ambitious project in direct competition with The Lord of the Rings Online. Despite its 16-year lifespan, the latter continues to receive updates from developer Turbine, illustrating the ongoing enthusiasm for Middle-earth in the gaming community.
