Obsidian Entertainment, the creators of Avowed, recently granted an interview to a Western editorial team, providing a wealth of information about their upcoming role-playing game. It appears that players anticipating a direct competitor to Skyrim might find themselves slightly disappointed, as Obsidian has a different vision in mind.
Upon the release of the first Avowed teaser, players immediately drew comparisons to The Elder Scrolls series. However, the developers at Obsidian Entertainment had slightly divergent plans.
In an interview with PC Gamer, it becomes clear that this game, originating from the creators of Fallout: New Vegas, is a more modest endeavor, aligning more closely with the spirit of The Outer Worlds, despite their initial intentions.
Feargus Urquhart, president of Obsidian Entertainment, shared insights during the interview, stating, “Initially, we aimed to create our own version of Skyrim. But as we progressed, we reflected on the fact that Bethesda made a great Skyrim, Mojang crafted an exceptional Minecraft, and Turn 10 excelled in racing games. We, on the other hand, excel in creating remarkable RPGs, don’t we?” Urquhart’s sentiments prompted the team to take a step back and evaluate their strengths.
Consequently, the developers shifted their focus to creating a more compact game, emphasizing an engrossing narrative, meticulous world-building, meaningful choices, and engaging companions. Avowed’s core lies in these elements, which are intended to take center stage and surpass the prominence given to them in other productions.
While the game will not offer the same level of open-endedness and myriad of side activities as Bethesda’s titles, players will be rewarded with meticulously designed quests that encourage experimentation and exploration.
During the interview, Obsidian also divulged several additional details about Avowed:
- The player’s character assumes the role of an emissary of the Empire, with the freedom to shape their personality, appearance, philosophy, and atmosphere brought to the role.
- Playable characters are limited to humans and elves only.
- The game is entirely single-player and lacks a cooperative multiplayer mode.
- You won’t be able to replicate the classic Skyrim trick of placing a bucket on a salesman’s head.
- Two companions can accompany the player simultaneously, each possessing unique combat specialties and personalities.
- Avowed incorporates multiple skill trees, but players are not constrained to a specific class or playstyle.
- The leveling system focuses on unlocking skills rather than allocating points to stats.
While we can expect to hear more about Avowed only after the release of Starfield, Obsidian has already provided glimpses of a wholly distinct production from what some players initially anticipated after the game’s initial announcement.
Avowed promises an RPG experience centered on immersive storytelling, dynamic companionship, and extensive choice-based gameplay. This doesn’t imply that Obsidian is creating a diminutive game; rather, it signifies a focused and purposeful approach to crafting an RPG that maximizes player engagement and enjoyment.
