In a groundbreaking moment for video game adaptations, The Last of Us has etched its name in the annals of history by becoming the first live-action adaptation to receive Emmy nominations.

The highly acclaimed series based on Naughty Dog’s beloved game secured nominations for notable performances by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, as well as a nomination for Best Drama Series.

While The Last of Us is not the first video game adaptation to be recognized by the Emmys, that distinction belongs to Netflix’s Arcane: League of Legends, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Series in 2022. Nonetheless, the recent nominations represent a significant milestone for the genre of video game adaptations as a whole.

The Last of Us: A Resounding Success

The series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed game has garnered immense popularity and critical acclaim, solidifying its success. Shortly after its premiere earlier this year, the show’s undeniable impact led to its swift renewal for a second season. The Last of Us has captivated audiences and elevated the reputation of video game adaptations within the entertainment industry.

Joining The Last of Us in the Best Drama Series category are other prominent contenders, including Star Wars: Andor, The House of the Dragon, and Yellowjackets. In the Best Comedy category, Wednesday receives a nomination alongside Jenna Ortega for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi also garners recognition with a nomination for Best Miniseries.

The Last of Us is not the sole series to make history at this year’s Emmy nominations. Succession achieved a record-breaking feat with three nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong. Sarah Snook also received a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.
