Expanding Possibilities: PS5 Unveils New Features in Global Update

With the holiday season around the corner and a wave of exciting new games on the horizon, the PlayStation community has reason to celebrate. Sony has just unveiled an extensive system software update for the PS5 worldwide.

This update, largely shaped by invaluable input from beta participants, introduces a range of new features, encompassing accessibility, audio enhancements, and social connectivity. Let’s dive into the details.

New Accessibility Features

One of the most notable additions is the option to utilize a second DualSense controller for assistance. This empowers users to operate their PS5 console with two controllers, effectively mimicking the experience of using a single controller.

This feature opens up new collaborative gameplay possibilities, allowing friends to join forces or offering a helping hand during challenging in-game moments.

To activate this feature, navigate to [Settings] > [Accessibility] > [Controllers] > [Use Second Controller for Assistance] and enable [Use Assist Controller].

Immersive Audio Experience

The update also introduces support for 3D Audio, powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech, on compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices.

This enhancement ensures that players can enjoy a heightened level of auditory immersion. Whether it’s the rustle of leaves or the echo of footsteps, the audio landscapes of PS5 games will come to life like never before.

To enable Dolby Atmos, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [Audio Output] > [Audio Format (Priority)] and select [Dolby Atmos].

Social Feature Enhancements

The party interface receives a substantial update, allowing users to invite players into a closed party without automatically adding them to a group or creating a new one. Additionally, players can now extend invitations to parties, be it open or closed, to entire groups rather than individual players.

The update also introduces a ‘Share Screen Preview’ feature, providing a sneak peek of what someone is sharing in a party before joining. This enhancement adds an extra layer of convenience and ensures a seamless party experience.

PS Remote Play Expansion

PS Remote Play, which enables players to stream games from their PS5 or PS4 console to various devices, sees a significant expansion. The app is now available on devices running Android TV OS 12. This broadens the horizons for enjoying favorite games, even when away from the primary gaming setup.

Additional Enhancements

The update further includes Voice Command improvements (limited release in the U.S. and U.K.), where users can now navigate help content pages using voice commands. Additionally, a range of new features for the PS App on iOS and Android are set to roll out in the coming weeks.

Support for Larger-Capacity SSDs

Expanding storage options, the update now allows the use of M.2 SSDs with a maximum capacity of 8TB (up from the previous 4TB limit). This provides users with greater flexibility in managing their game library.

Gratitude to the Community

As always, the PlayStation community’s feedback plays a pivotal role in shaping these updates. Sony expresses gratitude to its dedicated user base and invites them to share their excitement about the forthcoming enhancements.

In a season filled with promise for gamers, this comprehensive update breathes new life into the PS5 experience. From accessibility to audio, and from social features to storage, Sony has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing every facet of the gaming journey.
