Sony Pictures’ long-awaited remake of the iconic 1968 sci-fi adventure “Barbarella” has taken a significant step forward, with acclaimed filmmaker Edgar Wright in talks to direct the project. Wright, known for his unique visual style and genre-blending narratives, is set to bring his talents to the remake, which will star the rising Hollywood sensation Sydney Sweeney in the titular role.

Joining Wright on the creative team is the accomplished screenwriter Jane Goldman, who is negotiating to co-write the script alongside Honey Ross. Goldman’s impressive resume includes co-writing credits for successful franchises like “X-Men: First Class” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” highlighting her expertise in crafting compelling stories for the big screen.

The original “Barbarella,” directed by Roger Vadim and starring Jane Fonda, has achieved cult status over the years, with its campy yet groundbreaking exploration of sexuality and feminism in a futuristic setting. Set in the 41st century, the film follows the adventures of the titular heroine, an astronaut on a mission to stop an evil scientist from unleashing chaos across the galaxy, all while encountering a series of bizarre and sensual misadventures along the way.

Sydney Sweeney, fresh off her acclaimed performances in “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You,” has been attached to the “Barbarella” remake since 2022, and her involvement has only heightened the anticipation surrounding the project. The actress, known for her versatility and commanding screen presence, seems poised to bring a fresh and captivating interpretation to the iconic character.

For Edgar Wright, the “Barbarella” remake marks yet another high-profile project on his slate, following his recently announced involvement in the adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man,” which will star Glenn Powell. Wright’s distinct directorial style, characterized by a blend of humor, action, and genre subversion, makes him an intriguing choice to breathe new life into the beloved sci-fi property.

While plot details remain scarce, the addition of Jane Goldman as a co-writer suggests that Sony Pictures is aiming for a franchise-worthy adaptation, leveraging Goldman’s experience in crafting expansive cinematic universes. The collaboration between Wright’s directorial prowess and Goldman’s storytelling expertise promises to deliver a fresh and exciting take on the iconic source material.
