The long-awaited social sandbox MMORPG Pax Dei has finally launched into Steam Early Access, but the rollout has been marred by a wave of player criticisms over the game’s pricing model and a plethora of technical issues.
Developed by Mainframe Industries, Pax Dei aims to offer a massive player-driven world blending mythological fantasy with open-ended homesteading and adventuring. However, many early adopters have taken issue with the game’s monetization, which charges up to $100 for the premium “Launch Edition” granting four plots of land.
“The pricing is a common complaint among Pax Dei players, as the $40 version gets you one plot of land…while the $100 version gives you four,” summarized one critic. “This is on top of a planned subscription model.”
Beyond the costs, Pax Dei’s Early Access debut has been hindered by a litany of bugs, glitches and stability problems impacting the overall gameplay experience. Players report frequent crashing, inability to join clans/parties, lag spikes, and items disappearing unexpectedly.
“Literally nothing works. Even if it did, this is a barebones Unreal Engine asset pack and not an actual game,” wrote a disgruntled Steam reviewer.
While some see potential in Pax Dei’s open-world sandbox with mythological lore and player-driven economy, the rocky launch has resulted in a “Mixed” user rating on Steam so far, with only 43% of reviews being positive.
Mainframe has already issued some patches addressing key issues like lag and item deletion bugs. However, in a Discord post, the developer acknowledged the “hectic” first day and outlined persisting problems like login and invitation errors still requiring fixes.
The team maintains the pricing structure could evolve based on player feedback throughout Early Access, which is expected to last around a year leading up to the official launch in 2025.
Outlined roadmaps detail major updates arriving to overhaul Pax Dei’s homesteading, adventure, and civilization mechanics over the coming months as Mainframe aims to refine the ambitious mythological MMORPG and win over its currently divided audience.
As it begins this crucial public testing phase, Pax Dei faces an uphill battle to stabilize its experience, justify its costs through compelling gameplay, and muster a strong community foothold in the highly competitive MMO market.
