Joaquin Phoenix has unexpectedly left the cast of an untitled LGBTQ-themed romance film set to be directed by Todd Haynes. Production on the movie, which was scheduled to begin filming in Guadalajara, Mexico later this month, has now been halted.
The project was written by Jon Raymond and developed by Haynes, Killer Films producer Christine Vachon, and Phoenix himself. Phoenix was set to star opposite Danny Ramirez in a story exploring an intense relationship between two men who leave California for Mexico in the 1930s.
According to Vachon, Phoenix’s departure just days before filming came as a shock. In a since-deleted Facebook post, she described it as “a nightmare” that had left those involved “devastated.” Sets had already been constructed in Mexico at an estimated cost of low seven figures.
While the reasons for Phoenix’s exit remain unclear, Vachon defended the project and his involvement. She noted that Phoenix initiated the development of the story and pushed for Haynes and Killer Films to bring it to life. The production company has a track record of working with LGBTQ talent.
Haynes, known for acclaimed films like “Carol” and “Far From Heaven,” previously suggested the movie may earn an NC-17 rating due to explicit scenes. International sales agent mk2 Films was also on board.
Going forward, producers have said Phoenix’s role will not be recast, leaving significant doubts around the film’s future. The sudden change highlights the fragility of filmmaking and potential financial impacts of last-minute departures.
While Phoenix prepares for the premiere of “Joker: Folie a Deux” at Venice Film Festival, the industry awaits news on the fate of what was anticipated to be a thought-provoking addition to Haynes’ filmography.
